1P closes after open in browser and logged in ?

Hope someone can help me with this... When ever I use one of my browsers (FF, GC, Safari) if 1P is locked and I need to get a username/pwd for a form I click on the icon in the for example username field. 1P app opens I enter my pwd for 1P. then it disappears behind the browser (great) but then 1P app also closes ? is this by design ? anyway to make this a preference to keep open ? 1P ext in browser is then unlocked.
