Question

1Password app login vs Account login

Hello - I just upgraded from 1Password7 to 1Password8. It seems that when I log into the application (Mac, iOS), I have to use my "account" password. Since I created a complex password and I keep it in 1Password, it becomes a Catch-22 and I can't get to the password (I was able to retrieve it from the Apple Passwords app). Is there a way to have a different  password for the app vs the account? Is there another solution to this (apart from using a different app to store the password for 1Password?)

Thanks for your help.

Hello @rakeshg! 👋

Thanks for reaching out! Your account password is the secret that unlocks 1Password and it should be the "one password" that you memorize. You can use this guide to choose a memorable and secure account password:

To avoid having to enter your account password each time that you need to unlock 1Password, you can turn on Touch ID or Apple Watch unlock for 1Password on the Mac, or Touch ID/Face ID/PIN unlock for iOS:

I hope that helps!

RE: or Touch ID/Face ID/PIN unlock for iOS

I think the PIN unlock would do what I'm looking for (at least on iOS) but I can't seem to enable it. When I turn on "Allow unlocking with passcode" on iOS, it does not save the setting and it reverts back to "off" when I go back. I followed the steps outlined linked above (Touch ID is on) and I can turn on the passcode option in privacy, but it is not saved.

UPDATE: Works on iPhone but not on iPad

@rakeshg

That's correct, you might sometimes still be prompted for your account password. You can find this documented on our support page:

Sometimes, you’ll need to enter your account password instead of your passcode, PIN, or pattern:

  • If your passcode isn’t recognized five times in a row
  • If the amount of time in Settings > Security > “Confirm my account password” has elapsed
  • If you change your passcode, PIN, or pattern

You'll also need to remember your account password (and have your Emergency Kit) when adding 1Password to a new device or if you need to reinstall 1Password on your current device.
