"1Password Installer would like to access data from other apps"

Hi there,

I was about to update/install 1Password app on my Apple laptop. A security alert popped up during the download & installation, asking if I wanted to allow 1Password to access data from other apps. I have 3 questions, before going ahead with the installation:

What data is it accessing, if I do click "allow"? 

Is it a security risk in any way?

If I don't allow it access to other app data, what effect does it have on my normal use of 1Password?

Hello folks, 

Thank you for the question! The "1Password Installer.app" would like to access data from other apps alert is normal and expected when installing 1Password 8 on a Mac running a modern version of macOS.

The macOS alert is triggered when the 1Password 8 installer checks for older versions of 1Password on your Mac so that it can help you migrate items stored in a standalone vault in that older version to 1Password 8 and your 1Password account.

If you know that you don't have any standalone vaults, and all of your items are already saved in your 1Password account, then you can choose to click Deny and the installation will proceed normally.

Hi Bree,

Thanks for being cautious about this and reporting the issue. Could I ask if you were doing a fresh install or an update of 1Password and, in either case, which version?

We had a thread about this come up recently that had similar questions to what you're asking:

macOS apps can contain several different components and a recent change to macOS resulted in all of an app's components being required to be manually added to an app's entitlement manifest rather than being automatically included so that those components can access 1Password's Group Containers folder. 


If a 1Password app component (such as the updater) isn't in the manifest then you'll see a prompt asking you to give 1Password access to data from other apps. Our developers have previously resolved this issue by adding the updater to 1Password's entitlement manifest but it looks like other components may still need to be added and the team will investigate this further. 


For the time being, you can click "Deny" when prompted without running into issues. If you clicked "Allow" in the prompt, 1Password was not granted access to data from any other apps and there's no other action that you need to take at this time. That being said, if you'd like to revoke this permission you can uninstall and reinstall 1Password and then click "Deny" if you see the prompt again in the future.

    Very informative, thank you, Simon! No, It wasn’t a fresh install, I was updating on a Macbook running OS 15.6 Reassured I’m not causing any trouble either way, be it Allow or Deny!

      Same issue here on macOS 15.6.1 using the latest installer downloaded from 1password.com (8.11.6).

      Before the installation, I’ve removed the previous 1Password installation by following this guide: https://www.1password.community/discussions/1password/1password-installer-would-like-to-access-data-from-other-apps/158640
