1Password passkey not working after clean installation of Windows 11 – Chrome asks for USB security key
Hi everyone,
I'm having an issue with 1Password passkeys after performing a clean installation of Windows 11.
My setup
- Windows 11 (clean install)
- Google Chrome (latest version)
- Latest 1Password desktop app
- 1Password Chrome extension installed
- Microsoft account
- The passkey is stored in 1Password (I can see it in the app).
The problem
When I try to sign in to my Microsoft account using the passkey, Windows Security appears and says:
"Insert your security key into the USB port."
Instead of prompting me to use the passkey stored in 1Password, Chrome/Windows seems to be looking for a physical security key (such as a YubiKey).
Before reinstalling Windows, the same passkey worked correctly with 1Password on Windows 10.
What I've tried
- Signed in to the same 1Password account.
- Confirmed the passkey still exists in 1Password.
- Installed the latest 1Password desktop app.
- Installed the latest Chrome extension.
- Set up Windows Hello PIN.
- Restarted Windows and Chrome.
Questions
- Is there anything that needs to be reconfigured after a clean Windows installation so that 1Password becomes the passkey provider again?
- Why is Windows Security requesting a USB security key instead of using the passkey stored in 1Password?
- Are there any Chrome or Windows 11 settings that I should check?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
