Question

Ability to set a Default Vault - New Feature

My wife and I use 1Password across multiple devices. We have a mostly shared logons for things like the bank, the utility company, My1Password, Netflix etc etc...

I think recently something has changed. I'm sure there used to be a 'default vault' option (I might be wrong though). Now EVERYTHING I create is defaulted to my personal vault not the shared vault. This is really annoying as i keep having to manually move things between the vaults. I know I can change this when creating the new record, but it is annoying and I shouldn't have to. Good customer design is to reduce the number of interactions a customer has to make but this is not the case as every new record would require an extra click to change the vault.

Can there be a new setting where I can change my default vault. I can then set this to the shared vault not my private vault.

Hello @AndyS1967! 👋

I'm sorry for the confusion. If you're creating new items using the 1Password 8 for Mac app then you can set a default vault by following these steps:

  1. Open and unlock 1Password for Mac.
  2. Click on 1Password next to the  in the menu bar.
  3. Click on Settings.
  4. Click on General.
  5. Set "Save new items in" to the desired vault.

I hope that helps! 🙂

Hey Dave
How about the mobile app (iOS)? Andy is correct, this used to be a feature in the old version. I used to be able to set this in version 7 on my phone, which was very useful since I have vaults for personal and business use, and I definitely don’t want to mix the two.

@naydencho

It's coming to iOS and Android too! It's live in the beta versions right now and will be in the stable versions before long. :)

Hi team,

I've looked into this and confirmed the setting suggested. This is now defaulted to the shared vault

However, when I create a new item this default is being ignored and my private vault is set.

It isn't a massive issue, as i can change the suggested vault, it is just that I don't always remember and I have to occasionally do a sweep to move things from my private vault into the shared vault.

Version is '1Password for Mac 8.9.14 (80914009)'

@AndyS1967

The 1Password app and 1Password in the browser each have their own "save new items in" setting, and it looks like yours are different. Here's what to do:

  1. Right-click 1Password in the toolbar of your browser and choose Settings.
  2. In the General section at the top, set "Save new items in" to the correct vault to match what you have in the 1Password app.
  3. Try creating a new item again. It'll default to the correct vault this time.

Give that a go and let me know how it works out for you. :)

I have been having this same issue, thanks for the fix above. I am wondering why the two settings wouldn't sync up??

@1enginepilot

I've let our Product team know that you'd like to see the desktop app and the browser extension share the same default vault setting. Thank you for the feedback! 🙂
