Add the Search Icon or add a shortcut.

I am incredibly confused on why the search icon would be removed. It is so awkward to click on the search bar. Why I have to search is because autofill fails which is becoming increasingly common or app dev didn’t register a domain name with their app no there are no associations. There is more but regardless the ability to initiate and clear a search is basic functionality. I’d love to see the search icon brought back another option can be to make a user preference on what the double tap on items does, e.g. brings back to the items page or brings back to the items page and opens a search. This preference could be turned off by default. Please add this.

Hello folks,

Thanks again for all of the feedback. I thought that I would provide an update in this thread. Based on all of the feedback received from users in the community, social media, support, and other places the team has added the ability to immediately focus the search bar by pulling down on the Home, Items, and Watchtower screens when using 1Password for iOS.

You can also immediately launch and focus search by long-pressing on the 1Password icon on your home screen and then tapping Search.

The team will continue to iterate and test other approaches for search in the future and we do appreciate all of the feedback, even if specific suggestions/requests in this thread aren't implemented at this time.

I won’t say this is going to make me stop using 1Password, but it’s giving me a couple thoughts about the perspective of how they handle user input.

Amazing, truly fantastic work 1Password team:

1/ Still cannot press the Item tab to highlight Search bar so you still have to reach
2/ Search bar exists in three different places, so pressing search bar in one tab vs another doesn’t talk to each other. (Why even have tabs? lol why not just combine Home and Item and have the Tiles totally customizable? Once again, why even have Watchtower tab?)
3/ Search in Watchtower, even as “designed”, still does not work and straight-up crashes the app lol

I know this feedback is going straight to the trash so best of luck to any other user coming through the forum hoping to be heard!

@insecuretoffee

Thanks again for the feedback, I've shared it with the team.

Search in Watchtower, even as “designed”, still does not work and straight-up crashes the app lol

I'm sorry that 1Password crashed on your iOS device. The team was able to reproduce similar behaviour when searching using the Watchtower page in 1Password for iOS back in December a few times but we haven't been able to reproduce the issue recently. If you can still reproduce the issue using iOS 18.2 and 1Password for iOS 8.10.56 then I'd like to ask you to create a diagnostics report from your iOS device:

Sending Diagnostics Reports (iOS)

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support+forum@1password.com.

With your email please include:

Please send the entire file.

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here. Thanks very much!

Ahh so according to that blog post @Manaburner linked to they also said this on the search bar change: "This also aligns with where the search bar is located on other devices, creating a more consistent experience." So basically, they've decided to just use the same codebase as android or do they mean tablets? Is consistency really a goal when the end product is a consistently worse user experience?

Either way, it's clear 1p are no longer focused on making their product the best it can be in favor of making it as average as possible. So sad to see the leaders in UI/UX/Security in the password management space go the same [removed] route as most other companies. For the longest while, this was the one app I didn't have to look for alternatives for.. It's always worked efficiently while staying out my way. The need to make everything worse for current users to entice new ones is a losing move seen time and time again.

  1. Make good app.
  2. Get popular.
  3. Influx of money.
  4. Internally, start to listen to business people instead of creatives.
  5. Externally, start to listen to complaints of basic users about things they have no clue on. (most users literally never look at even settings)
  6. Quality of everything goes down as they listen to the above groups. (shared codebases, cheaper/less features, etc..)
  7. Alienate power users/people who actually advocate for your app in favor of attracting new users.
  8. Congrats, you've made it: [removed]
  9. ???
  10. Actual fans/users of 1p leave?

It's actually insane to me how in 2024/25, we're reverting to old design when phones are literally so massive, they can't be used with one hand. There aren't really any new small phones purchaseable anymore. And yet, 1Password has now designed this as if everyone has an iphone 4, or with the expectation that everyone has pop sockets?! Or does 1p think everyone holds their phone with one hand now and pecks/types with the second hand index finger?!

To add insult to injury, the revert back is half baked. There are plenty of ways to implement both or even MORE customizability if 1Password really wanted happy users. And as said above, the search bar at the top isn't even universal or shared history?! So now I can have three different searches (well two, watchtower does crash every time) going on each tab with no way of telling which one I was on or need to be on to find my item?! I'm gonna take a page out from the 3 year old complaints play book and make this as overwhelming as possible. 1Passwords "new" change back to the old search bar is objectively worse and is harder to use.

I'm honestly so perplexed to know why this was done at all, let alone THREE years later. 1Password must have had a good reason to ADD the search tab back in the day. What possibly could have changed in UX/UI to make 1Password re-think THAT decision. I die inside thinking 1Password is CHOOSING to ship an inferior product to appease old complaints. Or is this some new design philosophy that has decided peak mobile design was in 2018?! In the age of AI everything no less.

If you listen and take all complaints to heart, the product will inevitably become average.

1Password are the ones who intentionally chose to add the search tab. Does 1Password ACTUALLY believe now in 2025 that this change is better?! Or is 1Password just listening to users who instinctively panic at change because most people have no idea what they want until you give it to them. Were people still complaining all the way up until 1Password reverted the change?! I find that hard to believe 3 years after the fact.

Now that literally every app is shipping AI this with AI that where search is the first thing open, 1Password have decided to swear off search altogether as it's "too hard to use without a top bar" to have it's 2018 design back. What a joke.

It’s funny, I made the post here https://1password.community/discussion/136282/feature-request-clear-search-field-with-double-tap-of-icon and a few months later the feature was implemented and for the first time even I thought I can’t believe a company listened and made a change. 1P earned my respect and love. My have the mighty have fallen. I hard core pushed everyone I knew to 1P, even the company I worked for. For your sake let’s hope a better platform doesn’t come because I’ll be open to it. I changed to 1P I can change away from it.

Search Icon is back on iOS mobile app, thank you for listening to our feedback. This is renewing my faith in sharing feedback.

You got my hopes up @birchmeier but it's just more buggy software. It showed up once and when you re-open it disappears again. I am on version 8.10.58.

On the plus side, double pressing Home, Items or Watchtower _still _ doesn't open Search, as in your original suggestion.

January 24, 2025

@birchmeier Which App Version are you using? I don’t see a search icon in beta 1Password for iOS 8.10.60 (81060004)

Oh you’re right, same thing happened after opening and closing.

@1P_Dave can we just add the search icon back as a user option that can be turn on or off with the default is off? This way the “negative” experience 1P said people had would be user’s choice. Everyone wins in situation, even 1P, you/the company would gain loyal customers because feedback was actually implemented.
