Assign one Tag to Multiple Items

Hi everyone. I'm a new user and started using 1Password because it has everything I need and I consider it a complete manager.

I have a question about organizing tags:
If I have many passwords that already have a tag, when I drag them to another tag, these passwords retain both tags. Is there a way to assign a single tag (removing the previous one) to multiple items at once without doing it manually?

Thanks for the question! As you noted, you can add a tag to multiple items by selecting those items and then dragging and dropping them on the appropriate tag in the sidebar in the 1Password app. There isn't a way to remove one tag and add a different tag to multiple items using the 1Password app.

If you're looking to remove a tag from all items then you can delete that tag by right-clicking on it in the sidebar and then clicking Delete Tag.

Can you tell me a little more about the scenario where you'd like to remove one tag and add a different tag to multiple items at once? Are those items related in anyway? For example, are all of the item that you wish to remove a tag from in the same vault? I'd like to see if I can offer any further suggestions.

Yes, they're in the same vault. For example, I have a lot of passwords with the same tag. In the future, I decide to retag these passwords, so I have to swap the old tag for the new one, remove the old tag, and re-tag the new one. If I have to retag 100 passwords, doing it manually is difficult. I noticed that there's also a command prompt for 1password. Perhaps a script using the command prompt could do this?

Thanks for the reply. Do you need to swap the tag for every item that's currently tagged? If so then you might consider just renaming the tag. But that wouldn't work if there are other items that still need the old tag.

That being said, you could definitely use the command line to target all of the items in a vault in order to remove one tag and add another. You should be able to use the op item edit command to create a command/script to loop through a list of items in a vault and update their tag(s): 1Password - CLI (Item)
