Auto-fill frequently stops working (macOS, Safari)

Issue: The auto-fill feature in Safari frequently becomes non-responsive. This causes frustration because a first order feature for a password manager has an obvious bug. This results in me wanting to look for alternatives to 1Password.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open a login page that under expected circumstances should auto-fill.
  2. Select username field. Unlock 1Password if necessary.
  3. Display contextual 1Password dropdown within user field.
  4. With cursor, select desired item from menu.
  5. No response. When selected the item does not populate the field.

Expected result: Selecting an item in the 1Password menu should populate the credential fields.

Workarounds: (both of these are unacceptable)

  1. Roundtrip manually copy/paste out of native 1Password app.
  2. Quitting and reopening Safari.

Config:

  • 1Password for Mac 8.10.64 (81064007)
  • Version 18.3 (20620.2.4.11.5)
  • macOS 15.3.1 (24D70)
  • 2018 Mac Mini

Hello folks,

We’re sorry about the issues that you’ve reported when using 1Password in Safari. We’re happy to share that the latest update to macOS and iOS includes improvements to Safari that resolve a bug where 1Password's suggestion menu would stop working and autofill will stop filling in certain situations.

We also recommend taking the time to make sure that you’re using the latest version of 1Password for Safari.

Thank you for your patience as we worked with our partners at Apple to resolve the issue. If you're still seeing the issue then please send an email to support@1Password.com so that the team can help further.

@rysmac

It sounds like you may have been in the middle of an update. We recently released a new version of 1Password. Can you try the following and let me know how it goes the next time you experience it? It should help and not require you to restart the Mac.

During an update, the communication between the browser extensions and the app is severed by macOS. The following steps will restart that connection. This would be the only way to reestablish the communication.

 1. Look for our helper in the menu bar near the WiFi indicator and the clock. Right-click (Option-click) on the helper and select quit 1Password completely.
 2. Quit your browser.
 3. Wait a few seconds and then open 1Password from the Dock or the Applications folder and unlock
 4. Open your browser.

Hello Tommy, thank you for the reply.

I followed the steps you suggested and the problem was fixed—but only temporarily.

I have been able to frequently reproduce the issue by signing in through specific websites. The USBank login is an example of one such site. The 1Password menu is provided but when selected the credentials do not auto-populate. Click, click, click and no response. It's broken. And what's worse is that after this bug is triggered then the login for all sites is similarly broken. This makes me sad.

I also frequently encounter this issue and it's extremely frustrating. Agree with the OP that this is a pretty core and basic feature. Am happy to provide logs or whatever to help find the root cause, but it's still happening regularly with the latest updates.

@focher

I'm sorry that you're running into autofill issues in Safari as well. The next time that the issue occurs, can you tell me if opening the website in a new tab gets things working in the new tab?

I suspect that you're running into a known issue with Safari 18.4 and this will help me to confirm if you are or aren't. I look forward to hearing from you.

FYI the 1P support folks I spoke with suggested a more convenient workaround than fully quitting and restarting Safari:

When you encounter the problem, right-click on the page's tab and select "Duplicate Tab"

In the duplicated tab the extension should work as expected. Hope this is helpful while we wait for a fix from Apple...

Thank you for sharing this workaround with the community! 🙂

Frustrating this is still an issue with Safari.  And a bit disingenuous to mark this thread as "Solved."  The workaround does not work frequently, and 1Password is not now working as advertised (and paid for).  It seems to work in Firefox and Edge.  So this is an interface issue with Safari, which for Mac users is a frequently preferred browser because it integrates so well with other Apple software.

Please get this fixed.  I've been using 1Passward for many years and don't really want to change to another password manager -- but the product is now not working per spec for the money I've paid.
