Auto Fill not working for Vanguard.com login

I can’t use Auto Fill for a Vanguard.com login.  When I try to use Auto Fill I get a message at the login site that either my password or user ID is incorrect.  My work around is to copy and paste the password and type in the user ID.  My Auto Fill works at many login sites, but not for this one.  I’m wondering why this is happening at Vanguard.com and if you have any suggestions on how to enable Auto Fill at this site.

Hello @rgevans871! 👋

I’m sorry that AutoFill isn’t working correctly on Vanguard.com on your iOS device. So that I can better understand the situation can you tell me if you’re filling your login credentials using the 1Password browser extension in Safari? Or are you using iOS AutoFill (the prompt above your keyboard)? You can find a description of both methods here:

Can you also tell me which browser you’re using? If you’re using a third-party browser then are you able to reproduce the issue in Safari?

I use Chrome Version 151.0.7922.109 with the 1Password Extension

Version 4.7.5.90

Hi @rgevans871 thanks for confirming your browser and extension version.

Can you confirm if you’re using Chrome on an iPhone or iPad, or on a Mac or Windows computer? Your post is tagged under iOS but the 1Password Chrome extension is available on desktop computers. On an iPhone or iPad, Chrome uses iOS Password AutoFill instead, so it would not have a 1Password browser extension installed. The 1Password browser extension on iPhone and iPad is only available in Safari.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Sorry to but in to this thread but it appears that Chris C!P is not responding and I have the same issue.

I have been logging in to Vanguard for many years as a client. I am using a PC with Windows 11 and am using 1PW as a Chrome Browser extension. Have used 1PW for years. Just recently, I have been rejected when I try to log in to Vanguard.com with https://login.vanguard.com. This login gets redirected by 1PW during login process to https://instlogon.vanguard.com which I cannot sign in with my username and password. The internet says that numerous people have this problem now since 1PW released a new update. Please help.

Hi @seattlerust, I’m sorry to hear you’re having filling issues with Vanguard as well.

The behaviour you described, where you’re redirected to a different Vanguard page where your login details don’t work, is a known issue. Our developers are working on a fix, which is currently available in the Nightly version of the 1Password extension.

I don’t have an estimated release date for the stable version yet, but I recommend keeping the extension up to date so you receive the fix as soon as it’s released.

If you have any questions, let me know.

My work around is to go to Vanguard.com and click on Personal Investor and then click on login.  At the  login page I click on the 1Password ‘Sign In ‘ box which then fills in my credentials.  Not quite as handy as AutoFill, but almost.  The 1Password ‘Sign In’ box must be a fairly recent innovation with 1Password as it wasn’t appearing at the Vanguard login page when I was doing the copy and paste to get my password installed, so that is a nice improvement if AutoFill doesn’t work.

Hi @rgevans871, thanks for taking the time to share your workaround here. I’m glad to hear that the new sign-in experience is working well for you.

Could you let me know what steps you’re taking to fill when the issue occurs? For example is this using the menu that appears below credential fields, a keyboard shortcut, or the “autofill” button from the extension’s main window?

I believe I described the steps I take in my previous note other than I do unlock the 1Password extension before going to Vanguard.com, clicking on Personal Investor and then Login.  I don’t use the Auto Fill in the extension.  The 1Password ‘Sign In’ box appears at the Vanguard login page.  I don’t see a menu   below the credential fields.  No keyboard shortcut key.

Hi @rgevans871 thanks for clarifying the steps you’re taking.

I want to highlight the extension version you reported: 4.7.5.90.

That is a legacy version of the 1Password browser extension. It is different from the current 1Password browser extension, is no longer maintained, and does not receive updates. The current extension uses a newer architecture and it is also the version that will receive future fixes for the Vanguard redirect issue.

Before proceeding, makes sure that you can sign in to your account on 1Password.com and that you see all your vaults and items there. Make sure you also have access to your Secret Key. Once you’ve ensured that all your data is securely stored on our servers and that you won’t be locked out of your account, please update the extension before continuing to troubleshoot:

1. Open Chrome.

2. Paste chrome://extensions/ in your address bar.

3. Find the 1Password extension showing version 4.7.5.90.

4. Remove the legacy extension.

5. Get the current 1Password browser extension: Download 1Password for Chrome

6. Sign in to the same 1Password account in the new extension.

The current extension should show an 8.x version number, rather than 4.7.5.90. If you use the 1Password desktop app, the current browser extension is designed to integrate with 1Password 8: Download the 1Password desktop app

As my colleague 1P_Gem mentioned, the Vanguard fix is available in the Nightly version of the current extension. If you prefer to remain on the stable version, you can continue using the inline “Sign In” workaround and keep the current extension updated so you receive the fix when it becomes available in the stable release: How to keep 1Password up to date in your browser | 1Password Support
