Best practices for switching to passkeys & any gotchas

I’ve been a 1P user for a long time (2008?). I’m firmly in the Apple ecosystem (macOS, iOS, iPadOS), though I use Google software a lot (Chrome as my browser on macOS, Gmail, Google Calendar, etc). I’ve been following the progress of passkeys, and up till now have been holding off switching most accounts, I’ve only set up passkeys for a few less important things.

So, are passkeys ready for prime time now? Any gotchas I should look out for in a macOS/Chrome and iOS/Safari environment with a Family account and shared vaults?

One thing that annoys me right now on macOS is every time a site tries to enroll a passkey (without asking me first!), I get a prompt from 1P to save it (which I decline), then a prompt from macOS to save it (which I decline), and then a prompt from Chrome to save it (which I decline). That makes me worried about where my passkeys will end up, something I’ve never really worried about with passwords.

Thanks!

Hello @foobar! 👋

Thanks for the question! I personally use passkeys everyday and they work great! You can find our guides on saving a passkey on both macOS and iOS here:

I can definitely see how that can be a bit annoying. When you decline to save a passkey in 1Password, the passkey request is passed through to macOS in case you’d like to save the passkey there or use a hardware security key to save the passkey. Regarding Chrome, make sure that the built-in password manager is turned off: Turn off the built-in password manager in your browser

I hope that helps.
