Question

Better to Organize by Vault or by Tags?

Hi, all.

I'm relatively new to 1Password, less than a year. I've slowly been adding all my password and account information to 1Password.

So far, EVERYTHING I've added to 1Password when creating a "New Item" is a "Login" which, by default seems to be placed in the "Private" Vault. To try to organize entries, I've attached tags to entries, for example, "Email" for my various email accounts, "Community" for forums and social media accounts, etc. I notice 1Password includes a "Community" Vault. Should I be putting my community entries in this vault instead of using tags to organize things? Is one method recommended over the other? If so, how do I move an entry from one Vault to another? (Just click and drag?)

Hi @DavidB52,

The way you choose to sort your items really comes down to personal preference. Some users prefer the visual separation of having multiple vaults, while others prefer to use a single vault and organise with tags, and many use a mix of both.

The main difference is that an item can only live in one vault, but you can apply multiple tags to the same item.

To move an item between vaults, you can drag and drop it onto the destination vault, or right click it in the item list and click "Move...". To select multiple items at once, hold Ctrl while clicking on items in the list. Dragging and dropping an item onto a tag will add that tag to the item.

Regarding the "Community" vault you've mentioned, there isn't a default vault with that name. Is there any chance that you're using a family account, and it's either the default "Shared" vault, or a vault a family member has created and shared?
