Browser extension in Firefox requires multiple attempts to unlock

For about the past couple of months, whenever I click on the 1PW icon in my browser (Firefox) toolbar, instead of immediately presenting me with the little Touch ID/PW window option, it first requests the full password, and I have to click it about 7-8 times to finally get the Touch ID/PW window. Sometimes it then opens with touch ID, but sometimes it locks again and I have to click it a couple more times to get the touch ID window to unlock it. This never happened before, and it's very frustrating.

I was on MacOS 15.6 (just updated to 26.0.1 - same behavior), Firefox 143.0.3; M2 Macbook Air; 1PW 8.11.14 (81114019, on BETA channel); Browser extension v 8.11.12.27 (I just updated it 2 days ago - no change).

Any thoughts on why this recently started happening?

Thanks for answering those questions. Can you check to make sure that you have 1Password for Mac set to run in the background even if the main window is closed:

Open and unlock 1Password for Mac.
Click on 1Password next to the  in the menu bar.
Click Settings.
Make sure that "Keep 1Password in the menu bar" and "Start at login" are both turned on.

Then restart your Mac and try to reproduce the issue again. If those options were already on then let me know.

Hi @Lorraine_! Thanks for writing in. That behaviour really does sound frustrating, I'm sorry for the trouble here.

I'd like to ask a few questions to help get a better idea what might be causing this:

If you're using 1Password in any other browsers on your Mac do you see the same behaviour?
If you open and unlock the 1Password for Mac desktop app directly are you prompted to use Touch ID on the first try?
What's the integration status of the 1Password extension in Firefox (Right click the 1Password icon in Firefox's toolbar > Settings > General)?

Hi Timothy,

Thanks for responding.

On Safari, the large login box opens and then the Touch ID opens a millisecond later, without having to prompt it again.
If I open the 1Password for Mac desktop app directly, the Tough ID box pops right up.
Integration status is Connected, and all selections are on.

Never had this problem before, it is annoying. Sometimes after prompting it several times to get the Touch ID box and unlocking it, it locks right back up again, and I have to prompt it one more time.

OK, I followed Dave's suggestions and it worked. I hadn't been opening 1Password in the background, since I try to keep as few app open at a time as possible. So, thanks, Dave!

Interestingly, however, this behavior only started up 2-3 months ago; I had never kept 1PW open in the background, just used the browser extension, and never ran into this behavior before, so something must have changed in 1PW.

I'm having the exact same issue, but I'm using Google Chrome as my browser.

macOS 15.7.1, Chrome 141.0.7390.55, 1PW 8.11.12, 1PW browser extension 8.11.12.27

I'm sorry that you're seeing a similar issue. Can you check to make sure that 1Password is set to run into the background, see this post.

If 1Password is already set to run in the background (the menu bar icon is turned on) and you still see the issue then let me know.

Hi @1P_Dave , this did the trick! I had actually proactively turned off the menu bar icon as I always access 1Password using keyboard shortcuts and thought 1PW always ran in the background and the menu bar icon was redundant for my use + taking up visual space on the menu bar (I was wrong). Thank you for your help - all is working well now. :)
