Question

[BUG] [Firefox] Username or Password icon does not open application.

Bug has very low priority as there is a work around.

I searched the community before posting and I couldn't find anything about this small bug.
I only found this similar issue but not the same as the one I am reporting.

Other searches I did.

Bug description/issue:
There is an icon next to the password/username fields that opens the 1Password application when is clicked. It does work with Google Chrome and Brave, but it doesn't work with Firefox.

Doesn't work = it doesn't open the 1Password application.

Work around:
Click the 1Password extension icon to open it that way.

OS: Windows 11 Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.4037)

Firefox version: 130.0 (64-bit)
1Password application version: Windows 8.10.45 (81045002)
1Password Firefox extension version: 8.10.44.34

All the versions are the latest versions as of the time creating this discussion.

Hello @Julio860JVL! 👋

Thank you for reaching out! As long as you have the 1Password for Windows desktop app installed you should be able to unlock 1Password from the icon in a website's username/password field. It sounds like app integration might not be working correctly with 1Password in Firefox. Can you try the steps in this article:

If that still doesn't work then let me know and I can dig deeper. 🙂

Thanks for replying @1P_Dave!

The button still doesn't open the program when it is fully closed.

I was able to follow the first set of instructions in the link.

"1Password desktop app"
and
"1Password browser extension"
And my computer passed both of those two tests.

The other set of instructions do not apply to me since I am not using macOS, Linux nor my computer is managed by an organization.

And I do know my username doesn't contain any special characters, but I did check my username with the command "whoami" even though that command is used for Chrome, Edge, or Brave. I still checked anyway, and this is the output of the command.

Command Prompt
Microsoft Windows Version 10.0.22631.4169 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

I am almost 100% sure that anyone can reproduced this bug by installing Firefox and trying it out.

EDIT: START
I took a few more minutes to read through some of the other reported Firefox bugs, and here is the link to three bugs that are very similar to what I am reporting.

https://1password.community/discussion/29192/whats-up-with-the-firefox-plugin

https://1password.community/discussion/145073/bug-firefox-extension-does-not-open-the-selection-dialog-after-identification

https://1password.community/discussion/33198/firefox-extension-auto-fill-doesnt-pick-up-active-site-on-first-go/

One consistent factor among all the reported bugs is that they only occur with Firefox and work perfectly fine with other browsers.

It seems the Firefox extension has been misbehaving for a while now.
EDIT: END

@Julio860JVL

It doesn't look like those issues are an exact match if I'm understanding your report correctly. And threads from 2014 and 2015 would relate to an entirely different browser extension that was replaced with the modern extension.

Just to make sure that we're on the same page, are you referring to this icon:

If this is the icon that you're referring to then what do you see after clicking on it? Do you see a tooltip appear asking you to unlock 1Password from the toolbar? Or does nothing happen at all?

@1P_Dave

Yes that is the button I am referring to and nothing happens when the button is pressed.

Thanks for the reply and the screenshot. I would expect to see that behaviour across all of your browsers if either the 1Password desktop app wasn't installed (which you said it was) or app integration wasn't turned on (but you don't see the behaviour in other browsers). I'd like you to check to see if app integration is turned on between the 1Password for Windows desktop app and 1Password in Firefox:

  1. Open and unlock the 1Password for Windows desktop app.
  2. Click your account or collection at the top of the sidebar and click Settings.
  3. Click Browser.
  4. Make sure that "Connect with 1Password in the browser" is on.

Then in Firefox:

  1. Open your browser.
  2. Right-click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and click Settings.
  3. Make sure that "Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app" is on.

If that still doesn't work then do you see a green dot in the browser settings page? Or a different coloured dot and an error message?

@1P_Dave

That's correct Dave, I do see a green dot in both of the browsers (Firefox and Chrome).

I created a quick 2 minutes video showing exactly what is going on.
https://we.tl/t-mn1gM4bWty
The video will be deleted automatically by default in 7 days from now.

I also uploaded the file here but the extension must be renamed to mkv.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do on my end.

Cheers!
