Can't save passkey via Paypal app

Question

Yet another use case where saving passkey to 1password fails but saving it to iCloud keychain works. Paypal app fails without further explanations ("we could not save your passkey at this time").

There's a bug in iOS 17 itself at the moment which prevents third-party passkey providers (like 1Password) from saving or using passkeys in apps. Apple are expecting to resolve this in a future update to iOS.

In the meantime, you should be able to use passkeys with 1Password in a browser, as we note in the PayPal listing on https://passkeys.directory/, shown below:

Please note: Saving and signing in with passkeys in the PayPal app is currently incompatible with third-party passkey managers on iOS. We are anticipating this to be fixed in future iOS 17 releases. Saving and signing in with passkeys in web browsers on iOS will work as expected.

I hope that helps explain what's happening. We're keen to see when Apple will fix this bug, since it affects everything except iCloud Keychain in non-browser apps.
