Confused About Passkeys

Hi everyone. I am confused about passkeys. On my laptop and phone, I have fingerprint verification but on my desktop facial recognition. Will a paskey created with say, a fingerprint also work with facial recognition? Also, does 1password save and store passkeys as it does with passwords?

Thanks for any help!

1Password Version: 8.10.46
Extension Version: 8.10.46.26
OS Version: Windows 11 23H2

Hi there @brettn

Yep, the exact method you use to unlock 1Password on each platform won't matter – it could be Touch ID, Face ID, your account password, anything that'll unlock 1Password.

It's the fact that 1Password is unlocked that'll allow you to use that passkey, just as it does with a Login item or anything else. And yes, 1Password stores passkeys in a Login item, just like it does already with a password.

I hope that explains things fully, but please do let me know if I can be of any further help. :)

OK. So say I use my fingerprint scanner to make a passkey. How does the passkey know the facial recognition on my desktop PC is from the same person?

@brettn

It doesn't! Your biometrics aren't actually part of the passkey, which is how it can sound based on the messaging you might hear from elsewhere.

As long as you can unlock 1Password where the passkey is being stored, you can use it. It's exactly the same as unlocking 1Password to use a password.

I am confused. I saved a Passkey to 1Password. How do I logon to an website on PC? I am trying to access the government portal in Australia and I assumed I would just login basically as before. Instead I get a QR code that I have no idea what to do with. Can someone help? I am lost. Cheers.

@brettn

Thanks for the reply. In order to sign in with your saved passkey, make sure that you have 1Password installed in your browser: Download 1Password in the browser

Once installed, follow these steps to sign in to the government portal with your passkey: Save and sign in with passkeys in your browser

If that doesn't work then let me know and I can help further.
