Question

Deleted vaults & organizer permissions

I opened 1Password just now and got a notification that the global shared vault in my family account was deleted. This was either due to a family member's mistake or a bug. While I figure out which, I have a couple thoughts to share:

  • I wish that the account recovery permission were separate from vault management. I've designated a few people as family organizers so they can help with account recovery if needed. But I'd rather they not have the ability to delete vaults to guard against accidents.
  • It's too bad there's no way to recover deleted vaults like there is with deleted items. Accidental vault deletion is catastrophic data loss. (Yes I know there's a stern warning confirmation before deleting a vault. But, assuming this case was due to a mistake, it wasn't enough to prevent it from happening.)

@skatch

You might opt for generating a recovery code and sharing with them to guard against the other possibilities while still providing peace of mind. For me, I have both because of my fear of losing access e.g. My being incapacitated and my kids (adult) need access for legal reasons.

Generate and use recovery codes

There are a lot of people of all ages and technical abilities in my family account. A few of us could generate and share a recovery code, but it's not a workable solution for most. Assisted recovery via an organizer is a great option that covers everyone.

(Also as an update: it turns out that the shared vault was deleted on purpose and we've managed to sort things out. I still believe that more fine-grained vault management permissions as well as limited vault recovery would be helpful.)

I agree with you 100%. I hope this is something we can bring about in the future. I'll be right there at the first of the line with you.
