Disable username 'suggestions' when creating a new entry

hi, all...I'm a new 1Password user and have something bugging me (no pun intended) & couldn't find the answer via search. hoping the community can help :-)

When I'm creating a new entry on the 1Password app on my Mac, when I click on 'username' it gives me a list of (seemingly) all the different usernames that are stored by 1Password. Any chance there's a way to disable this?

Hey @bpclay :

It's currently not possible to disable the list of usernames shown when creating a new item in the 1Password 8 app. With that being said, we currently have an open feature request for the ability to disable this feature, and I've added a proxy vote on your behalf.

Let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.

Yes please! There's crap in there I don't even know where you got it from. Stuff like this should be filled with user-added items only, not an long list of whatever random stuff 1P has grabbed over years and not editable in the slightest.

I am following up on the original request from four years ago regarding the "username" field behavior when creating a new entry. I want to add my voice to this feedback.

This specific behavior is extremely disruptive and, for me, turns what should be a seamless experience into a point of frustration.

The Problem with "Current Suggestions":

  • The core issue is that the app suggests previously used usernames from my vault when creating a new login entry. In modern security practice, the standard is to use a unique username for every single service, or at least to let the password manager generate one (like an email alias).
  • Therefore, suggesting an already used username for a new account is not just unhelpful, it actively promotes poor security habits.

Proposed Solution

  • This behavior should be an opt-in feature
  • ... or, ideally, removed entirely from the new entry creation flow

1Password is an outstanding product, but this "feature" significantly hinders the creation of new items. I strongly urge the team to prioritize addressing this user experience issue.
