Do I actually need the Safari Extension?

I always use ⌘+\ to fill logins.

I've just uninstalled the Safari Extension and I can still use ⌘+\ to fill logins.

What am I missing, why do I need to Safari Extension?

Hi @iwaddo,

Based on your description, it sounds as if you're experiencing a known issue with the Safari browser extension. The main symptom for this issue was that nothing would happen when clicking on filling suggestions on certain websites.

The good news is that our development team has resolved this issue, and you should no longer experience it if you're running the latest version of 1Password in your browser. Can you confirm if you're running the latest version of 1Password in Safari (8.12.5.2)?

If the issue persists once you're up to date, let us know, and we'll be happy to investigate further with you.

Hello @iwaddo! 👋

Thanks for the question! Universal Autofill (the feature that powers the Command-Backslash autofill feature) is a powerful tool that allows you to fill your login credentials in Safari and other Mac apps without having to install 1Password in the browser.

That being said, 1Password for Safari supports additional features that include (but are not limited to):

  • Saving and updating your logins in the browser.
  • Login suggestions directly in form fields on the page without triggering Universal Autofill.
  • Support for saving and signing into websites with a passkey.
  • Support for integrations with Fastmail and Privacy.com.
  • Auto-save prompts to capture new logins and password changes in-browser.

I hope that helps.

OK, so I've installed and enabled the Safari Extension. It just seems to be so clunky :-(

I'm sorry that 1Password for Safari doesn't feel as smooth as it should be, this is an active focus area for our development team. Are you able to share a few specific places where 1Password for Safari can work a little better so that I can share those with the team?
