Duplicate logins are being created

Thank you for reaching out! Recent versions of 1Password 8 include a duplicate finder through Watchtower, try these steps:

1. Open and unlock 1Password for Mac.
2. Click on Watchtower in the sidebar.
3. Click on Show Items under Items with duplicates.

The duplicates remover tool will only look for items that are exactly the same and that are located in the same vault.

It sounds like the items that you have aren't exact duplicates so they won't be detected by the tool. Can you tell me a little more about the different Login items that you have for different website addresses? 1Password will only fill your login into a page that matches the website address saved for that login, did you copy and paste your username and password into other website addresses and then create a new Login item for that page?

Thanks for you reply. In 1password for Mac / Watchtower, I do not see "Items with duplicates". I only see Reused Passwords, Weak Passwords, Passkey Available, and Two Factor Authentication. The duplicates tend to happen when the website has multiple URLs for their login page. 1password will create a new login for the second URL and will want to create a new password as well.

Are you using the 1Password extension in Chrome on your Mac when these kinds of new entries are created? Or 1Password in a different browser or device? How are you entering your username and password into the other webpage? Are you copying and pasting it into the website?

I am using the 1pw extension in Chrome on my Mac. When there isn't a duplicate login, the extension enters the username & password automatically. When there are duplicate logins, I have to copy & paste the username & password.

Thank you for the reply. 1Password will never fill your username and password into a website unless you've chosen to do so by clicking on a login suggestion or by clicking an option like Autofill or Open and Fill from the extension pop-up or the desktop app.

Is it possible that you have passwords stored in the built-in password manager in Chrome, or in some other password manager, that is filling in your passwords on certain pages and then 1Password is offering to save those filled passwords as new logins which creates the duplicates?

You can check to see if the built-in password manager in Chrome is turned on, and turn it off, by following the steps in this guide: Turn off the built-in password manager in your browser

It isn't the password manager in Chrome. I believe my situation is similar to this post in 2010 with a feature request to allow users to merge duplicate items:

It seems like some websites uses more than one URL for signing in, in which case 1password creates two separate logins for the same site.

Thanks for the reply. The thread that you linked to is almost 14 years old and refers to a very early version of 1Password that works differently from the current version. The advice in that thread wouldn't necessarily apply to your situation today. You wrote:

I'm not quite understanding how this happens since 1Password only creates a new item if you tell it to create a new item. Would it be possible for you to create a screen recording of this happening so that our team can take a look?
