Question

Duplicating an item immediately shows a message about duplicates

Hi

In one of your recent updates, it seems that you now show a message on an item when it has duplicates. Which makes sense.

But it doesn't make sense after you've just created a duplicate :-)

In other words:
1) Right-click an item and select "Duplicate"
2) Select the vault

Result: The item is displayed with a banner saying "This item has 1 duplicate"

Expected result: When you've just created a duplicate and not edited it yet, it would be better NOT to display such a banner.

Hello @khornung! 👋

Thank you for the feedback! The behaviour that you've described is by design as far as I know. You wrote:

I'm not sure why I understand why the duplicate banner shouldn't be shown in this case? After you've duplicated an item, you now have duplicates which Watchtower will detect and flag. Can you clarify your suggestion a little further?

Sure, I'm happy to clarify.

When I duplicate an item, it is in 100% of the cases because I want to modify the item right after duplicating it to modify the information in the item.

So having a banner appear right after duplicating saying "Avoid confusion by deleting duplicates" goes agains my intent as a user. I just created the duplicate for a purpose :-) And I'm more confused by being asked if I want to delete it in this case.

So I would suggest that you don't show this banner right after duplication. But if I navigate away from the item and then select it again later, then by all means show the banner.

I know it's not important in the big scheme of things and that such a fix makes your code a bit more complicated to maintain. But I still think it's worth for your team to consider.

@khornung

Thank you for the feedback! I've shared it with the team internally. 🙂
