Experiment #4 – New interface in 1Password.com’s vault view

Hi Folks!

Today we’re bringing you a beta version of a major update to the vault item view interface on 1Password.com. Our goal is to align the design with the main desktop application as well as improve our ability to introduce new features consistently across all of our platforms.

Unlike previous experimental features in labs, you are not required to manually enable this experiment, and it will not appear under the “Labs” tab in the 1Password apps. As this is an updated vault item view of our web interface, you can access it directly via this link.

At this time, the new interface provides a read-only version, which means it is limited in functionality compared to the current interface. We wanted to start testing as early as possible to identify any potential issues well in advance of a full rollout. Full functionality that aligns with the current vault item view interface will be gradually introduced over the next couple of months as we continue testing and developing.

The primary questions I'm trying to answer are:
1. Do you prefer this new interface over the old one?
2. Do you see value in us rolling out this new interface of the vault item view to all 1Password users?
3. Are you experiencing any performance issues?
4. How often do you use the vault item view in 1Password.com?

We are eager to hear what you think about this new web interface. Please share your feedback and thoughts below in the thread!

Updates

Jun 20

  • Added Watchtower
  • Added a link to the admin dashboard from the vaults menu
  • Added "What's New" to the help menu, which links to our new release notes page
  • Added vaults in quick find results
  • Improved performance when loading an account with many vaults

May 16

  • Added ability to share items
  • Added item sharing history
  • Recently Deleted now limits deleted items to the last 30 days

May 2

  • Added support for viewing item history

Apr 15

  • Added support for creating and editing items
  • Added categories back to the sidebar

Feb 15

  • Fixed part of the issue @firebeyer mentioned with custom item categories. Right now all custom categories will be grouped together under "Others", and we'll be fully supporting active custom categories soon.
  • Group and sort categories in the item list filter menu to match the desktop apps.

Feb 6

  • Began supporting localization for the 12 languages already supported in the rest of the web app and other apps. There are some tasks remaining there.
  • Maintain the last item list sort order throughout the app and across page reload.
  • Show an alert popup when encountering unexpected errors, to hopefully avoid just showing a blank screen like @norysang reported.
  • Squashed some minor bugs.

That's the one I was referring to actually. When I use that search bar, if it says "Search in [vault name]" then the results are only from that vault. Are you seeing something different?
Yes, if I'm searching for something that happens to be the name of a vault as well. Try searching for the name of another vault and see if it happens for you as well.

I just had the issue with the tags again. If I try to update tags in one item, then go to another item and try to update tags there as well, it seems to save the tags fine for the first item, but then any subsequent items it does not save the changes to the tags. After moving onto another item, an error toast message pops up saying that the changes were not saved with an "Edit" button, but clicking the button does nothing.

Ohh, you're referring to vaults themselves, not items. Got it. I do see that. That's a strange one because it's helpful to be able to switch vaults from the keyboard like that, but I can see how it's confusing since the vault is not "in" the other vault.

I've been thoroughly using 1Password for over a year now at my company. It's pretty fantastic.

The only downside I've found recently is we have multiple shared vaults for different teams. Sometimes I need to share the same password with different teams. I find myself "duplicating" the password to multiple vaults to do this. If I update the password (or if anyone else does), every shared password has to be updated, too.

There should be a "Shared" section or something where you can select who has access to the password rather than having to share to multiple vaults. I'd like to have checkboxes or even the same set up as the vault settings, per password, in a Shared Passwords area. If I share "AT&T" or something with multiple people, I could only save it one time, allow view access (so they can't change it but can use it and view credentials), and see exactly who has access to the password. This would REALLY make life so much easier!

Thanks for the feedback, @jennifer7i884! This is something that's been on our minds too. It's a bit more technically complicated because currently items are encrypted with a key belonging to a vault. So you could technically achieve this by creating a new vault and moving the item there (instead of duplicating it), then sharing that vault with everyone who needs it.

But that's definitely not as good of a user experience as what you're describing, so we need to go back to the drawing board a bit to provide the ideal solution.

How can we turn off notifications for this thread? I am no longer interested in being notified about updates on this thread. 90% of the traffic from the LP forums in the last 3 months has come from this thread specifically. Where is the "stop notifications for this thread" switch? This is a function you can find on any decent forum software on the internet.

I do not want to stop all thread notifications, just for this particular thread.

I do prefer the new interface.

It is absolutely vital to be able to sort by reverse created/updated: congrats on this, but please could it be the default? Lots of casual users will never discover it otherwise, and I'm not sure if the setting is sticky.

There seems to be no notion of the 'vault sets' which some other clients/views of 1Password support. I'd like these to be selectable and, again, sticky, please. I have plenty of items I access rarely, or in another role, or which I have archived: putting these in vaults which are not normally in the 'vault set(s)` I use is invaluable.

ll in all this is a good update. Please keep it up and don't enshittify 1Password!

@1P_Rob

You previously helped us to leverage Copy Private Link while viewing a record so we could share a direct link to the record.

All our saved links recently broke despite updating them with Copy Private Link equivalents. I suspected I did something wrong in my browser bookmarks and ignored it for a while.

Today I reproduced the private link not working immediately after obtaining it.

Steps to Reproduce
1. Login to 1Password website.
2. View a record from your 1Password Favorites.
3. Click the ellipses in the upper right corner.
4. Click Copy Private Link.
5. Open a 2nd tab.
7. Enter login credentials.
8. Notice how the details frame shows a locked watermark. I should be able to view the details of the record, I viewed it in the 1st tab, used Copy Private Link, and got blocked from viewing it in the 2nd tab despite still being able to view it in my 1st tab with subsequent refreshes.
9. View a record from your 1Password Favorites and notice how the 2nd tab now shows it. This extra step should not be required.

Am I doing something wrong or did this functionality recently break?

Logging in spins forever. A previous comment suggested to open a ticket with a console log. I have done that and my ticket is KUZ-68834-884.

I don't like the new design at all, because all platforms will look exactly the same. Besides, nothing was broken in the old design. Why fix something that isn't broken? I think it's a shame that 1Password has decreased in both design and reliability over the last two years.
It reminds me of Apple's new Photos app. They fixed something that wasn't broken.

@1P_Rob I am now consistently encountering the error when editing an item. The first item I try to edit after logging in saves successfully, but if I try to edit a second item I get the error message "Failed to save item"

If I refresh the page, I can see that the changes I made did not save. Refreshing the page first will also allow further changes to be saved successfully, but any made without refreshing will fail with the same error message.
