Facebook Google Authenticator - Vicious Loop

Trying to login to facebook on a desktop. It requires 2fa because I have that set up in my settings.

I used to use Facebook's code generator - now that is gone, so I am trying to set up google authenticator.

Fortunately I do have Facebook on my phone, but cannot get in to turn off 2fa, so I can turn it back on and get the QR code. 2 hours into a vicious loop - at some point I was able to upload a copy of my license, but was having camera issues. That was an option when clicking TRY ANOTHER WAY. 

Now the only when clicking TRY ANOTHER WAY is with the authenticator app. 

so... no facebook setup in authenticator app., so no code... and... no way to get the qr code to set up facebook in authenticator, because 2fa is locked on. 

cannot turn off 2fa on the mobile app, because it requires a google authenticator code to make any changes. HELP!
