feature request: DigiD as a logon with option

Hi everyone,

I have a feature request, or perhaps a question, for users in the Netherlands (or expats living or doing business here).

In the Netherlands, we use DigiD for many services related to healthcare, education, pensions, and government matters.
(More information: https://www.digid.nl/en/what-is-digid/)

Would it be possible to add DigiD as one of the available options in the "log in with" functionality?

Curious to hear your thoughts!

Best regards,
Remco

I doubt it would be possible for a Canadian company to acquire (requirement #2)  a Dutch 'social security number' (which we refer to as BSN (citizen service number)) and I'm imagining it would be a creative stretch to make software providers a public service (requirement #1). But it would be neat indeed :)

That’s correct. DigiD is intended for natural persons who are working in or with the Netherlands. The question is therefore aimed at individuals, as it makes it easier for them to log in to Dutch government, semi-government, and healthcare platforms.

For companies doing business in the Netherlands, the appropriate login method is eHerkenning, which is linked to the Chamber of Commerce (KvK) number.

Additionally, there is iDIN, which allows individuals to log in using their bank account credentials (if they hold a Dutch bank account).

I understand, but I do not really see how this would benefit security, as I presume most Dutchies will just use the 'Log in with the app' functionality and/or have the mandatory (and very stupendous) text message send for 2FA. So other than storing your DigiD username/password I doubt it would qualify for 'log in with'.

The way 'log in with' is currently designed is for OAuth2 or more generally SSO. While I do agree to some extend DigiD would qualify as such, the way it's implemented definitely does not function like that for me. If I look at a couple of Cities 'how to log in as a civilian' or hospitals, they all have different landing pages for their DigiD trigger, so programmatically I don't really see how a browser plugin would even 'detect' that there is a DigiD login on the page.

I'd love to be wrong btw :)

Hello @rwholzy! 👋

Thank you for the request! While I can't make any promises, I've filed a feature request on your behalf to have the team look into the possibility of adding DigiD as a sign in with provider in 1Password in the future.
