Feature Requests: place cursor in search field automatically

Until a few months ago, I remember that the cursor was placed automatically in the “Search the VAULT” field when opening the MacOS app so that I could just start typing. This seems to have stopped. In fact, nothing at all happens now. I need to CMD+F to get into the search field.

What would be nice is for something to happen, either have the cursor in the SEARCH field or start identifying entries in the long list of items, narrowing it down by live search.

Hi @berndorose, thanks for posting! I understand that you’ve noticed a recent behaviour change from automatically placing the cursor in the search field, to needing to use CMD + F, and you’d like to see the behaviour you remember restored.

Just to make sure I’m understanding correctly so I can file the most accurate feature request on your behalf, could you clarify what you mean by: “or start identifying entries in the long list of items, narrowing it down by live search”?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hello,

Sorry for being so cryptic…

I’ve had to look it up, and I believe it’s called “Incremental Search” “Search-as-you-type”, i.e. identifying the best and new matches with each letter typed - and I just realised that this is already happening… I’m feeling rather daft…

Still, having the cursor placed in the search field where I will always start every session in 1PW would be lovely, the CMD+F remains an extra step I need to employ every single time.

Hi @berndorose, thanks for getting back to me with these details!

I understand that while we do already have incremental search, you would like to see things changed so that the search field is focused each time the 1Password app is opened. I’ve filed your feature request with the team for future consideration, to see whether this could be added either as the default behaviour or a setting.

In the meantime, the below two keyboard shortcuts will take you straight to a search bar, in case you find that useful:

  • Press Cmd + Shift + Space to open the desktop app’s Quick Access search bar.
  • While active in a browser window, press Cmd + Shift + X to open the 1Password extension window with the search bar focused.

Let me know if you have any questions!

I second this request - it used to be that as soon as I opened the desktop application I could start typing into the search box to find what I needed. Now I have to click or cmd+F, which is super annoying after being able to do that for so long the other way.

Hi @1p-db, thanks for letting us know you’d like to see this changed as well. I’ve filed your feedback with the team.
