Feedback regarding how 1Password moves items between vaults
I know that this has been discussed, but I can't not comment: Today I discovered a large number of account records in my Windows client's Recently Deleted folder. I know now that they were records that I had recently updated in that client, then moved to a different vault. Because now I know that the Move function does a copy + delete, leaving duplicate files in the trash.
Before I knew any of that, my reaction was to have a heart attack. Because I thought that I had accidentally deleted these records. Or that another family member had deleted them. Or that some malfunction or hack had deleted them.
Other forum threads make it clear that product managers are backstopping the Move function to avert data losses that might cause real heart attacks. Today that really backfired on me. Because I no longer trust the 1Password app to do what it says it's going to do.
I'm still processing what that implies. But I'll suggest that if the Move function is going to do a copy + delete that results in duplicate files for the user to stumble onto, you could maybe reveal those two steps to the user somehow:
- Maybe show a progress bar with both actions distinguished as they're executed.
- Maybe display a "Done now" dialog box that tells what happened to the files.
- Maybe label the items in the Recently Deleted folder as remnants of a move. Or put them in a subfolder with an appropriate name.
