Question

Filenames of Attached Apple Photos

Hi

I'm sure the answer is it is Apple, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

If I attach a Photo using my iPhone the resulting attachment has a long largely meaningless filename.jpeg but if I attach the same Photo using my Mac the resulting filename is img_sequencenumber.jpeg.

Also, is there a way to rename the attached file?

Thank you for your help.

Hi @iwaddo

Great question — and you’re right, Apple’s handling of filenames can sometimes be a bit inconsistent between devices.

When you attach a photo using your iPhone, the filename often appears as a long, complex string. This is typically due to the way iOS generates unique filenames for images to ensure no duplicates across different apps and cloud services. On a Mac, however, the filenames are more standardized (e.g., IMG_XXXX.jpeg) as they follow the typical naming convention for files saved directly to disk or imported to the Photos app.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a way within 1Password to rename an attached file directly once it’s uploaded. If renaming is important for organizational purposes, you might consider renaming the file in your device’s file system before attaching it to 1Password.

I hope this helps clarify things! Let me know if you have any other questions.

PS: I'm sorry for the delayed reply here!

@1P_Blake

This is very much as I expected. Renaming before uploading is the way to go.

Thank you for your help.

What's preventing 1Password from implementing a rename feature that lets a user rename the attached file inside 1Password?

I wonder if it exposes the data in a way that makes renaming from mobile possible. Would be a nice feature.
