Question

Hardware key PIN does not work on registration

I am trying to set up 2FA using hardware keys, but I get stalled on this cycle:

  1. Select “Add hardware key”
  2. 1Password helpfully intercepts, I escape or click the hardware key icon
  3. System asks for PIN. I put in the hardware key PIN.
  4. System says to reinsert and activate. I do so.
  5. System says incorrect PIN.

Any thoughts? I’ve been using Safari / Mac but I can’t imagine browser matters.

Update: tried Firefox. System definitely says I have the wrong PIN. It’s not the wrong PIN.

Hello @Davert! 👋

I’m sorry for the delay in replying here. Can you tell me the following:

  1. Are you able to setup your security key for other websites that require and prompt your PIN? Or does the issue happen there as well?
  2. What kind of security keys are you using?

I look forward to hearing from you.

  1. Yes, I’ve had the issue with two sites.
  2. Tried Thetis and Yubikey.

Thanks for the reply. If the issue is happening on other websites as well then it sounds like the cause isn’t with 1Password itself. I would recommend reaching out to the manufacturer of your security key so that they can investigate why your PIN isn’t being accepted when using your security key on multiple websites.

Let me know if I misunderstood the situation.

I am pretty sure if I am trying two different brands of key, the issue isn’t the key.

It probably isn’t 1Password but the sites. Sometimes 1Password can do workarounds. Did I give you the sites involved but they’re in your private data? There are at least three of them now.

My solution is probably going to be waiting a couple of months and seeing if anything changes.

Does the issue still occur if you temporarily disable 1Password in Safari? You can find instructions here: Use Safari extensions on your Mac

That is a very good troubleshooting step. I’ll have to get back to you.
