Dave,

I've read through your instructions, and even had an IT pro help me setup 1P. But I can't seem to make anything work. I think 1P is too complicated for a simpleton like me. I am a personal user, but want SECURITY. Often times your instructions don't match what I see on my phone or laptop. Should I cancel 1P, and get something more user friendly?

Hi @pamsuelar! Thanks for writing in. I'm sorry to hear you've hit some roadblocks getting started with 1Password.

My colleagues and I would agree that 1Password is the best choice for beginners and power users alike. That said, when you're new to 1Password there can definitely be a few things to learn. We would be happy to answer any questions, and help make sure 1Password is working for you.

Could you share a bit more about what you're trying to do with 1Password that isn't working? If you could also specify what type of device you're using (Mac, Windows, iOS, Android) that would be helpful.

I have a PC, Windows 11, and an Android phone. An IT guy imported my existing sites/pws to 1P. However, when I try to log onto a site, it asks for my PW. I thought I would just be able to enter my 1P pw, but that doesn't work. Also, if I open a new site, and create a pw for it, I don't know how to "get it into" 1P. One of your "tips" was to make sure we use strong pws on all sites. I thought 1P would protect us, regardless how strong or weak each site's pw is.

Does this make sense?

Thanks for following up with me @pamsuelar.

1Password works a little differently on a phone and on a computer, so to start I would suggest we focus on your Windows PC, then move on to the Android device.

On a computer, 1Password uses the browser extension to help save and fill your information in websites. If you don't have 1Password in the browser installed, lets start there:

On your computer, sign into your account on 1Password.com.
Click your name near the top right corner, then select "Set up another device"
Under the "Step One" heading click "1Password for [your browser]".
In your browser's extension store, add 1Password in the browser, then follow the steps on screen.

While setting up 1Password in the browser you should see the option to start a tutorial. That's a great way to get some hands on experience filling and saving. You can also review our guide on filling and saving with 1Password in the browser for more information.

With 1Password in the browser installed, when you visit a website on your computer and click the sign in field do you see a prompt from 1Password (example below)?

If you see a suggested item (like my "Autofill test@test.com" above) and click it, will 1Password fill your information? If not, could you share what you do see? A screenshot may be helpful, just be sure to cover any personal information like a password or username. If you encounter any issues along the way, let us know where you ran into trouble.

Regardless of how weak or strong a password is, if it's saved in 1Password it's stored securely. However, a weak password like hello1234 is easy to guess, and storing it in 1Password wouldn't make it any harder for a malicious actor to exploit. Where ever possible, we recommend using strong unique passwords created with our password generator when creating new accounts or updating existing accounts.
