How do I disable 1Password guessing a username on new login item creation?

A somewhat recent update seems to have made 1Password make an assumption about the username for new login items. For a variety of reasons, it has been wrong 100% of the time for the dozen plus login items that I have made recently. I never want my password manager to assume things, for the reasons made clear by a famous quote about the word.

How do I stop this annoying feature?

Hello everyone,

I'm happy to share that, with the latest update to the stable version of 1Password (8.10.78), our team has added a setting to turn off the prefilling of usernames when creating new items in the app:

You can find instructions on how to update here: How to keep 1Password up to date

Thanks again for all of the feedback and for always helping us make 1Password more useful for your needs and your workflows.

Hello @ProratedMongoose! 👋

Thank you for reaching out! When you create a new Login item, 1Password will now automatically fill your email address in the username field and generate a password. Username suggestions are based on the vault that you’re creating a new item in and are suggested based on frequency of previous use in that vault.

You can read more about this new feature on our blog: 1Password product enhancements [Winter edition]: Mobile improvements, better item creation, and even more security features

I've let the team know that you'd like an option to turn this feature off. The team plans to add ability to directly choose which email address is suggested based on your default identity. This new functionality is currently being tested in the beta version of the apps and will make it into the stable version soon.

The way the feature currently works is creating false data in my life. That’s really bad in the context of a password manager. Suggesting that users edit the entry (as wa done on Reddit) before saving is not great. Asking users to remember a workaround for something most people don’t do that often is not a good way to minimize annoyance

Some possible fixes;

  • Mark fields as being guessed (and not intentionally added thorough direct user action) like done with fields extracted from webpages.
  • Suggest the auto-fill on clicking into the field.
  • Provide a preference to disable this feature which creates false data.

The 1Password reply to all of us who have been (almost) screaming to give us an option to disable this very annoying feature has been to tell us that this is their shiny new feature and deal with it. “Marked as solution” by themselves. It is frustrating to be ignored so badly. We don’t care if they want to keep this feature in, all we want is the ability to turn it off when it isn’t working for us. They don’t seem to care, which is mind-boggling to me. The prefilled username has been wrong 100% of the time for me too. In the latest update it now says it uses the username from the identity. Still 100% wrong 😑

Hello folks,

I wanted to provide an update here where everyone in this thread can see it. As discussed, 1Password will automatically fill your email address in the username field and generate a password so that you can create new items faster. Username suggestions are based on the vault that you’re creating a new item in and are suggested based on previous use.

In the last month (March 2025) the team has made an improvement to the feature, you can now configure a default identity and always have the email address of that default identity be suggested when creating a new item: Choose your default identity and credit card items

The team will continue to iterate further based on everyone's feedback and are looking into adding a setting to turn off username suggestions in the future. We'll continue to keep the community updated on new developments. Thanks again for all of the feedback!

What has been implemented is possibly a solution for some, but it is at best a bad workaround for me. I could create a default identity with a bogus email address but that means it is easy to forget that I need to remove that before saving and if I don’t I once again have false information in my password manager and that is very bad. Plus it means I can’t make use the default identity system in the ways it is meant to be able to be used.

To repeat my request in a different way; How do I disable 1Password from making assumptions that cause erroneous data to be put into something it’s vital never has false information in it.

@ProratedMongoose

Thank you for the continued feedback. There isn't currently a way to turn off username suggestions, but the team is looking into adding such an option in the future.
