Question

how to search from iPadOS 1Password home screen.

1Password on my iPhone has a nice little search icon on its home screen. But 1Password on my iPad, despite having three times the screen real-estate, seems to have no way to search on the Home Screen. Is there some way to add this?

I just learned about long pressing the 1Password icon to search before opening 1Password- that’s really cute but I think there should be a search field or icon directly on the 1Password Home Screen without having to hunt around for it. Or can I add this in some setting somewhere?

Agreed.

The long-press Search on the app’s icon in the dock doesn’t work for me, either.  It feels like I’m fighting 1Password more and more.

Hello @SteveRothman and @MrC! 👋

When using 1Password on iPad, you can find the search feature in the sidebar:

The sidebar is open by default when using 1Password for iOS in landscape mode and is collapsed in portrait mode. You can read more about search and the sidebar here:

I hope that helps!

Thanks Dave. There are certainly a lot of ways access search in 1Password.  I’ve been using iPad for over 10 years, and I use it almost strictly in portrait mode, that just feels normal to me. It’s the same as my phone, and the same as a book or magazine (which in many ways are what iPad has replaced for me). I have no idea what’s most common, but I’m sure there are a ton of people that mostly use iPad in portrait mode.  With the amount of screen real-estate available, it’s weird not to have the search be available right on the home screen, in portrait mode. I’m sure you can squeeze a little magnifying glass icon in there!  (or maybe have a setting so that the sidebar is on by default in Portrait mode, for people like me).

Yes I can do a long-press on the 1Pass icon, yes I can rotate my iPad, yes I can tap the little control to get the sidebar to show up. But that’s all friction, there should be a search icon or search field available on the home page every time I open up 1Pass. What happens now, is that pretty much every time I open up 1Pass on my iPad, I want to search for something, and I can’t believe I have to go through extra steps just to search.  Is that OK?

PS - Not scientific, but do a Google Image Search of “people using iPad” - easily half of the pictures show portrait orientation

@SteveRothman

That’s great feedback about search in 1Password on iPad! Thank you for sharing it and I’ve passed it along to our product and design teams internally. They’ll look into how we can further iterate and improve the search experience on iPad.
