Question

How to transfer my vault from an account owned by my former partner to my own 1Password account?

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to get some guidance on migrating my data to my own account.

Currently, all of my passwords and items are stored in a vault under a 1Password account that is owned by my former partner (it's their family/shared account, and I'm a member). For obvious reasons, I'd like to move everything over to a brand new 1Password account that I own and control myself.

A few questions:

  1. Is it possible to transfer or export my vault(s) from their account into my own new individual account?
  2. What's the recommended way to do this — is there a direct vault transfer option, or do I need to export my items to a file and re-import them?
  3. Are there any items that won't transfer cleanly (attachments, passkeys, document items, etc.) that I should watch out for?
  4. Once everything is moved, what should I do to make sure my data is fully removed from the old account?

I still have access to the items right now, so I'd like to handle this before anything changes with my membership on their account.

Thanks in advance for any help!

  1. While they may be the Family Organizer, it's your 1Password account, so you can do whatever you want with your account and your vaults including your private vault. Any items in shared vaults which you want to retain will need to be copied to one of your vaults before your account disconnects from the Families plan.
  2. Notwithstanding the above, I strongly recommend that you export all your data to secure storage. You should not need to import anything, but this insures you against that case.
  3. Everything should be exported in a 1PUX and importing into 1Password should be more reliable that other clients which can also import 1PUX data.
  4. Ensure that your data exists only in your vaults before disconnecting from the Families plan.

I also suggest waiting for a response from 1Password staff before relying completely on my advice, though you may need to be patient. Take care of that 1PUX export and copying items from shared vaults while waiting.

1Password should add a "from" section to Migrate your existing 1Password data to a family account.

Hello @leahme93! 👋

Thanks for the question! We have a guide that will help here: Leave a family account

If you haven't already created a new account then following the steps on the support page that I linked above will walk you through leaving your family account and creating your own account.

If you already have you own new 1Password account, then you can add both accounts (the old account and the new account) to the same 1Password app and then move your items from the old account to the new account: Migrate your existing 1Password data to a family account

Moving your items using one of these guides will transfer all of your items to the new account. Generally speaking, there's no need to export your items to a 1PUX file when moving them from one 1Password account to another (and 1PUX files don't include passkeys).

If you run into any trouble when don't hesitate to send an email to support@1Password.com and our team can help further.
