Question

How to use Passkeys on Temp Device

If i made a passkey for some site on my phone, lets say github, and then I needed to log into github from someone else's computer, there's a way to do that. you click passkey on different device, then it generates a QR code that you scan with your phone, then my phone asks for a thumbprint or my PIN and then i click yes and the site logs in. not my favorite user flow, but it exists and it works

now lets assume instead that my github passkey is in 1password. my 1password is not on the device that i need to log in on. how do i log into github now? since 1password works pretty different on PC and on Android, if the answer is different i'd like both.

Hello @Kure! 👋

Thanks for the question! In a situation where you have a passkey for a website saved in 1Password and you're signing into that website on a device that doesn't have 1Password installed then you can use a QR code and 1Password on your mobile device to sign-in. Before doing so, make sure that 1Password is installed on your mobile device and that autofill is setup on that mobile device:

Then, if you're signing into the website on your Windows PC, you'll choose the option to sign in using another device and scan the QR code using the camera app on your mobile device. You should then see the option to sign in using 1Password.

Let me know if you run into any issues or if I misunderstood the question.

Thanks for the reply Dave. scanning the QR code with my phone does not work for me. i have the latest version of 1Password for Android, and i have a passkey for github set up in github stored in 1password, but when i scan the QR Code Google's passkey system is the one that pops up, not 1password. i've tried to delete my device passkey but you don't seem to be able to. do i have to add the FIDO:/ protocol to 1password's list of links it should be the default app for or something?

I faced the same issue and the below worked.

  1. I used the Xiaomi 12 Pro running Hyper OS 2.0 on Android 15
  2. I was trying to log into my google account on a windows laptop which did not yet have the 1password app installed (work computer so did not want to install).
  3. I used the google lens feature in the camera app on my Xiaomi phone to scan the QR code that comes up on my Windows laptop when I choose something along the lines of "Login with Passkey" in the google account sign in flow. Did this since I faced the same issues mentioned earlier where the built in Xiaomi QR code scanner just shows FIDO:// and some characters instead of triggering the Android's passkey workflow.
  4. Then I received an option of using the passkey stored for that particular account in my 1password app on my android phone choosing which it asked me to scan my fingerprint on my phone and logged me into my google account on my laptop.
