IpadOS Safari browser extension crashing

Hello,

Any time I try to click 1Password, in the manage extensions tab in safari on ipadOS. It crashes safari, then loads the FaceID. This results in the extension not being accessible in Safari.

I can still get logins, using the autofill from the keyboard, but I cannot access the in-line method.

i have removed 1Password, restarted the iPad, reinstalled and setup 1Password again. Issue is still present.

Unsure if related, I did a remove history clean in Safari before hand, expecting after, to have to log into the extension again, but now it only crashes.

Versions:

ipadOS: iPadOS 26.4 (23E246)
1pw: 8.12.10 (I’ve tried release and beta versions)

I’m unsure about next steps?

EDIT: Reddit states it’s likely due to disabling in-line. I guess the extension crashing safari is just a loose end where it can’t finish the call.

Hello @TataruTaru and @AceNet! 👋

Thank you for following up. The team and I can reproduce this issue as well and it seems to affect other extensions, not just 1Password:

Since the issue occurs with other extensions as well, this appears to be a bug in iPadOS itself. I recommend reporting the issue to Apple from your end so that they're aware that you're affected by the issue. Our team is tracking the issue on our end as well.

To workaround the issue, as mentioned earlier in this thread, you can switch from Compact Tab Bar mode to Separate Tab Bar mode:

  1. Open iOS Settings > Apps > Safari.
  2. Set Safari to Separate Tab Bar mode.

Hi @TataruTaru, thanks for reaching out to report this (also I love your username!).

I'd like to have our team look into this crash further, as it definitely doesn't sound like this should be happening even after the recent changes that disable the inline menu when 1Password is set as your system AutoFill provider. Could you create and share a 1Password diagnostics report from your iPad:

Send a diagnostics report

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to: support@1password.com

With your email please include:

  • A link to this thread: https://www.1password.community/discussions/1password/ipados-safari-browser-extension-crashing/169301
  • Your forum username: TataruTaru

You'll receive a reply with a Support ID number.  Please post that number here.  Thanks!

Hi @TataruTaru, thanks for letting me know! I can confirm that we've received your email, and a member of the team will send you a reply there as soon as possible.

I forgot I sent my reply through icloud, so I missed the messages.

I can confirm the change to seperate tabs, stops safari crashing, I can even go back to compact tabs, until I completely close Safari. It crashes on the compact tabs again, until I do the fix again.

So it seems the issue is tied to compact tabs.

I also verify that the Safari app crashing is related to Settings > Safari > compact tab. Change compact tabs to separate tabs to mitigate the issue until the DEV team can resolve.

And, the compact view in safari causes selecting the 1Password extension in the browser to crash. Shocking development and testing of this “feature”. After more than 10 years with 1Password I’m ready to switch now, mainly due to the poor workarounds and lack of explanations and fixes on this issue.

@xyzulu

I'm sorry that Safari is crashing on your iPad when using Compact Tab Bar mode, I've moved your comment to the thread dedicated to that issue. Please see this reply for more details about the issue.
