Issues with 1Password with Profiles in Safari

The following issues I have had recurring when using the safari browser extention with the (new) Profiles enabled. This issue appears when running MacOS 13 and 14 Sonoma -

  • Safari 1Password browser extention works (unlocks) and fills in feilds on second, third or any additional profile that is setup and a window is opened.
  • From the "Default" profile the extension icon generally remains 'locked' or the window opens and the extension shows unlocked and shows passwords, however autofill, copy/paste action fail to respond.

  • A Clear History will reset 1Password - however when that is completed each profile is reset and the associated 1Password preferences are also reset

  • When more than one Profile window is open Activity Monitor has a 1Password Safari Web Extension process running for each profile that has significant resource usage.

1Password Version: 1Password for Mac 8.10.16 (81016047)
Extension Version: 2.15.1 21500107, on STABLE channel
OS Version: 13.6 (22G120)
Browser: Safari Version 17.0 (18616.1.27.111.22, 18616)

Dave, thank you for your comments. This is both useful and it gives me hope that things will get better. I will also send you my logs.

Like I started my post with "I love your product". I can only imagine how complex it is to support 1Password, thanks for not forgetting us Safari users.

@1P_Dave , I sent the information you requested. Hope you can fix it soon.

Just posting to say that this issue (not working with Safari profiles) is really annoying.

Created a forum community account just for this.

I have no other issues with 1Password but this.

Please let us know when you will have a fix.

Hello @AlPonRock,
Thank you for sending a support request, I’ve sent you a reply via email. Let’s continue the conversation there together.

@PaulTheFish
Thank you for sharing that workaround with the community! You can indeed use Universal Autofill to fill logins into Safari (and other Mac apps) without even installing the browser extension:
* Use Universal Autofill in apps and browsers on your Mac

@chipmc86
The entire team appreciates both your feedback and your kind words. Our team works hard to ensure 1Password meets your expectations, and improving the experience of 1Password in Safari is a priority. The team will keep an eye out for your email and will dig deeper into the logs from your Mac when they’re received so that we can suggest other workarounds if applicable.

I have not been able to use 1password in the last few months or so. Autofilling passwords only works 1/20 times, the extension times out and i have to click reload, after which the autofill still doesn't work.
I have tried the steps above which does absolutely nothing.

Safari profiles has been available for a while, please make this work or tell me what to do to make it work, is there a workaround that I can use until you fix the issue?

@SamIsAnnoyedWith1P @moulde I feel your pain! This is such an annoying problem, and I cant figure out why a company like 1password cannot fix it promptly. @1P_Dave I dont want to sound up myself, but I just dont have the time and inclination to wade through your console instructions. Anyway, so many people have already reported this, you would have thought you would be able to identify and fix the issues.

@jaylindell yes, that does work, thank you, still a faff to have to go into settings and enable / disable, so given 1 password isnt apparently making any effort to fix it, I'm looking for a replacement. Nordpass seems to be the best.

I've merged a few threads together in order to keep the conversation in the same place. 🙂

For those who are running into issues with 1Password for Safari please see my post here for a brief explanation of the current state of the situation. Our developers continue to work on this and hopefully the experience is made more stable in the future. As mentioned in my post, turning off app integration should allow you to workaround most of the issues.

Sending in a console log allows the team to identify the specific issue that you're running into and then to provide additional workarounds or possible solutions. You can find instructions here:

Attach the file to an email message addressed to support+forum@1password.com.

With your email please include:

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here. Thanks very much!

With regret, because this is a right pain, I have just cancelled my 1password account, because there is still no sign of any fix for safari profiles, and the broken extension slows me down too much.

Hi @1P_Dave ,

Do you if any progress has been made on this issue? Unfortunately, it has made using Safari and 1Password so cumbersome even with the work around in place.

Thanks!

@tryckman

I'm sorry for missing your ping. I don't have any updates to share at the moment but I did want to offer another suggestion for the time being, have you tried using Universal AutoFill rather than the Safari extension to fill your logins? Follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that the 1Password for Mac desktop app is installed: Get the 1Password apps
  2. Setup Universal Autofill: Use Universal Autofill in apps and browsers on your Mac
  3. Use the Command-Backslash keyboard shortcut to fill logins in any of your Safari profiles.

Let me know if that provides you with a better workaround while we wait for a fix. 🙂
