Keyboard shortcut doesn't focus search in the extension

This appears to be a change in behaviour after a recent update, maybe in the last couple of months. The previous extension worked perfectly, Ctrl + Shift + X to unlock/activate, focus defaulted to the search field so you could start typing without leaving the keyboard, then Ctrl + Shift + X would copy the password. This was really useful when you had to paste the password outside of the browser; it worked like a charm.

But in the new version, it a nightmare. Ctrl + Shift + X to unlock/activate but focus remains on the underlying webpage. You can try tabbing until focus moves to the search field but the behaviour is dependant on the underlying webpage, so you end up having to select focus with the mouse. Now you can search and hit Ctrl + Shift + C to copy the password. However, now you get an extra prompt if the entry you are copying is not for the current webpage, so you have to hit Tab, then Spacebar, now you can Alt + Tab to the application in which you want to paste the password. This is so awful I’ve started to investigate using the full fat client on Windows but really they need to fix the focus as a minimum.

Hi @MarktheSpark, thanks for reaching out to report this!

I’ve done some testing, however so far I’ve not been able to reproduce the behaviour where the search bar isn’t focused after unlocking with Ctrl + Shift + X. Could you answer the questions below for me?

  • Which browser are you using, and is it fully up to date?
  • What version of the 1Password extension are you running? You can check by right clicking the icon > Settings > About.
  • You mentioned Windows - which version and build of Windows is this?

In terms of the prompt you’re seeing when the password you’re copying isn’t for the current page, you can disable this with the steps below if it’s too disruptive:

  1. Right-click the 1Password icon in your browser toolbar.
  2. Select Settings, then Security & Privacy.
  3. Disable the settings under the Phishing prevention heading.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi 1P_Gem,

Thanks for getting back to me about this. I’m hopeful it’s just me with an odd setup but here are the details you requested

Browser: Vivaldi (8.1.4087.68)

1Password Extension: 8.12.23.33

Windows 11 Enterprise 25H2 (26200.9168)

Regarding the Phishing prevention, this is “disabled by an administrator” apparently. But it is still active and I can’t change the settings.

Thanks again for the help.

Hi @MarktheSpark, thanks for your reply!

You’ve mentioned that you’re using version 8.12.23.33 of the 1Password browser extension. The current version is 8.12.32.33. Would you be able to make sure it’s fully updated, and then test whether the focus issue persists?

Vivaldi isn’t one of the browsers we officially support, so I’d also like to separate a browser-specific issue from an issue with the extension itself. If possible, could you test the same shortcut in a supported browser, such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Brave? After unlocking with Ctrl + Shift + X, please check whether the search field is focused there.

If you’d like to continue using Vivaldi, you can try setting it as an additional browser in the 1Password desktop app. On Windows, open and unlock 1Password, then go to Settings > Browser > Add Browser. You can find the full steps here: Connect additional browsers to the 1Password app. Since Vivaldi isn’t supported, we can’t always guarantee that every extension behaviour will work as expected there.

Regarding the Phishing prevention setting, “disabled by an administrator” means that the setting is controlled by an administrator policy, so it can’t be changed from the extension. If this is a work-managed device or account, your administrator would need to change that policy.

Hi 1P_Gem,

Sorry, that was a typo by me, the extension is 8.12.32.33.

I tried in Edge and it works perfectly, so perhaps it is something that Vivaldi have changed in a recent update. I’ll try in a couple of other browsers too but thanks for even looking into this.

Regards,

Mark

Hi @MarktheSpark, it’s good to hear that it works as expected in Edge. I’d definitely be interested to know your findings after trying some other browsers as well.

Hi 1P_Gem,

I’m happy to report that the latest update to Vivaldi has restored the focus on activation behaviour :) It was the only browser on which I had seen the change so it must have been something they had done. But it’s so a relief to have it restored!

Thanks for your help.

Mark
