Low contrast in 1Password 8 for Windows

Hello @rwilen, thank you for this feedback. Accessibility and usability are really important to us, so we appreciate that you've taken the time to share your experience with this.

I have passed this feedback on to our development team so they can take a look (so to speak) at how this might be better done.

In the meantime, perhaps I can offer a more immediate solution:

1. Open 1Password as usual
2. Click ... > Settings > Appearance

There are a couple options here that might be helpful. Let me know what you think! 👇

1. Set Theme to Dark. This will create higher contrast between the item username text and the background.
2. If you think it'll be helpful, try increasing the Interface Zoom. Now that item username text will appear larger too.

Thank you for the speedy reply. I would very much prefer not to have to switch to the Dark theme to solve a problem introduced by a version upgrade, but I concur that it offers more contrast.

Re Interface Zoom, I don't see any such control. I do see that there appear to be some fields that briefly flash when I switch themes. But they won't persist long enough to be usable. Here's now the Settings screen looks:

"Please consider giving those of us with old eyes a break, and walking back this unusable design decision."

I'm just starting to use 1Password 8 on Windows, and first off my compliments to the designers - it's a very promising design, but as the other participants have noted - it is low contrast. 😢

Zooming the whole UI isn't a good fix for this - we have to work on relatively small laptop screens sometimes. (And my laptop display is set to 125% zoom at a system level already.)

The issues described in this thread appear to be accessibility issues (worth noting - not all disabilities are visible), and given best-practice in the industry, bringing a few users with vision problems or less than 20/20 vision into the testing pool would be very useful. They'd probably give you good feedback way before release.

Another helpful action for users with some types of vision issues is to use fonts with slightly thicker strokes. Some users don't necessarily have problems seeing the unzoomed letters but they do have problems seeing fine lines/strokes.

That said, the dark theme is much better in this regard - much better contrast! But we shouldn't have to be forced to use dark mode just to get better contrast :-)

Also, a wishlist item - the font used for the password, can it be "good old Courier New" like in previous versions, or at least a in a monospaced font? Not that we have to read passwords very often, but it was much easier to scan visually back when 1Password used Courier New.

I can appreciate that perspective, @pdutta, and the thoughtful perspective you've provided here.

While I can't commit to a specific font being used in future versions of 1Password, we understand the central importance of accessibility and will do our best to remove barriers and ease access anywhere we can. And we appreciate the excellent feedback on it in this thread, as well!
