macOS 15 1Password not an option for system AutoFill

I was trying to create a Passkey in Safari for https://passkeys.directory/details/synology, and when it attempted to make a passkey, it only allowed me to use the built in macOS Passwords app, but I would prefer to use 1Password for this. However, in Settings -> AutoFill & Passwords, 1Password does not appear as an option for autofill. Therefore, when creating the Passkey, I was only able to do so by saving it into the Passwords app.

This is not acceptable, however, since to use the passkey saved in Passwords, I need to have it's autofill enabled, which then overlays above 1Password's autofill. I wonder what the workaround for this is.

I do have 1Password enabled for Universal Autofill.

This doesn't occur for all websites. For many others, 1Password (Safari Extension) pops up to receive the Passkey as expected. But in this case it didn't work, and the root cause seems to be 1Password's absence from the AutoFill & Passwords Settings pane.

    1Password doesn't use the "Autofill & Passwords" feature in macOS System Settings so you won't see it listed there. Instead you can save and sign in with passkeys in Safari using 1Password for Safari:

    I recommend that you turn off the "Autofill & Passwords" feature in macOS Settings to avoid conflicts and then make sure that the built-in password manager is also turned off in Safari: Turn off the built-in password manager in your browser

    You can turn off "Autofill & Passwords," but macOS will still prompt you to turn it on, causing a confusing user experience. My staff complains that it's not working because of this.

    You can see in @twilsonco screenshoots he does have it turned off.

    For the user base to fully adopt 1Password, this would be worth developing.

    You would think 1Password would work flawlessly on a 1Password site.

    This is an issue that our team has reported to our community vendor, hopefully it'll be fixed in a future update to the platform. I've added your report to our internal tracking item for the issue. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

    I'm sorry that your staff is running into a similar issue. Can you make sure that your staff has completely turned off the built-in password manager using this guide: Turn off the built-in password manager in your browser

    If they can still see the issue after following those steps then can you post a screenshot of the prompt that you see along with what website you see it on? I look forward to hearing from you.

    I forgot to mention in my post that I started this process with that setting disabled (as it has been since I upgraded to macOS 15 with 1Password already installed).

    As you can see in the below not-at-all-complicated image, for this particular site the passkey creation process prompts me to enable the system AutoFill setting, or provides the option to use a physical security key or scan a QR code to create the passkey using an iOS device. No combination of options triggers 1Password for Safari to open its passkey creation dialog as expected/desired.

    This was why I had tried enabling the system AutoFill setting, which then allowed the passkey to be created, but only via the built-in Passwords app. I've since deleted that passkey and re-disabled the system AutoFill as/before you suggested. since it only leads to conflicts with the 1Password Safari extension.

    I'll mention that of the 40-ish sites that I added passkeys for, this was the only site that has this issue, so really this seems like a bug report for 1Password for Safari passkey compatibility with the Synology Account site, which https://passkeys.directory/details/synology, rather than a bug report about 1Password's absence from the AutoFill & Passwords Settings pane, as I initially reported.

    Does that help clarify the issue I'm having?

    In the meantime, I've just reverted to normal 2FA for this website until the issue is resolved, and I suggest that if it cannot be resolved quickly, that Passkeys.directory be updated to reflect the site's incompatibility. Since, as I said, every other site I've tried that's listed as compatible has indeed worked correctly.

      This is the primary issue causing me to be unable to use 1Password at the moment. The system autofill needs to be implemented because it's used in many places other than just the Safari app.

      I did, but it wasn't a seamless replacement for the native experience.

      Why is it necessary to use accessibility and a universal autofill extension, instead of the platform autocomplete extensions, i.e. https://developer.apple.com/documentation/bundleresources/entitlements/com.apple.developer.authentication-services.autofill-credential-provider ?

        Thanks for your response.

        Twilsonco screenshots covered it well, but here are mine.

        As you can see, “AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys” is turned off, but you cannot turn off “Set Up Codes In”; the only option is Apple's Passwords app. I think this issue would be resolved if 1Password were an option here.

        This is the Prompt that comes up and obscures all one password options until you do something about it. This should be fixed by programming 1Password for “Set Up Codes In”.

        It's not clear that you need to hit “Cancel” to get to the 1Password options, creating confusion for users.

        Thank you for the reply. The "Set Up Codes In" option in macOS settings has to do with saving one-time passwords for 2FA and it doesn't have anything to do with the passkey saving flow. 1Password isn't currently offered as an option for the macOS feature but you can save one-time passwords using 1Password in the browser: Use 1Password as an authenticator for sites with two-factor authentication

        From the screenshot that you provided, I do see that both the macOS prompt and 1Password are appearing in Safari on your Mac when you try to sign in with a passkey. So that I can investigate further, I'd like to ask you to reproduce the issue one more time and then create and share a 1Password diagnostics report from 1Password in your browser:
