macOS AutoFill is now in public beta!

Hey everyone!

We're excited to share that native macOS AutoFill is now available in public beta for 1Password. This has been one of the most requested features for years, and we're now at a point where you can test it out and give us feedback!

What's new in beta:

  • By adopting Apple's Passwords API, 1Password functions as a native Credential Provider on macOS for logins. You can view autofill suggestions directly within Safari and other supported desktop apps.
  • Passkey support is included in this beta as well. Fill, create and update passkeys easily through macOS autofill.
  • The 1Password Safari extension can be used alongside macOS AutoFill to access additional features not currently supported by the Passwords API.
  • Coming later in Beta, you can set up one time codes using the same integration.

How to try it:

  • Update to 1Password for macOS 8.12.22 or later from the beta channel.
  • Make sure you’re on macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later on Apple silicon.
  • Go to 1Password for Mac Settings > Autofill > Set up macOS AutoFill, then select "Turn On" from the macOS permission prompt. You'll see "Active" status once it's enabled.

Try filling logins and passkeys and let us know how it goes! We're happy to be one of the first credential managers to adopt these APIs and we want to get it right for you.

What is estimation, when this feature will be moved from beta to release?

Also are there plans to support it for 1Password for work licences?

Thanks for the question! We generally don’t announce specific timelines for new features since dates tend to slip and we want to avoid disappointing folks.

If you’d like to try macOS AutoFill today then you can switch to the beta version and then switch back to the production version at anytime.

Also are there plans to support it for 1Password for work licences?

The feature is already available for 1Password Teams and Business as long as you’re using the beta version of 1Password for Mac.

When will this feature be back in beta? I just got the error that “Native macOS AutoFill is under exploration” and forced to turn it off.

I know the native autofill had issues (like double unlock) but it worked better on a lot of websites, compared to the Safari extension. (Not to mention native apps)

EDIT: In fact, the website I’m on right now (2K Account login) is not bringing up the 1Password browser extension autofill, while macOS & Safari correctly identify it for autofill. Ergo, beta experience would work here, release experience does not.

It sounds like the feature flag that currently limits the feature to the beta version isn’t loading properly on your device. Can you make sure that you’re running the latest beta version of 1Password for Mac (currently version 8.12.32-26) and then lock and unlock the 1Password desktop app one more time. Let me know if that gets things working.

I’m on the latest version and on the beta channel, seems like a full app quit and reopen fixed it. Thanks!

If it helps, this happened on macOS 27 Beta 4

During testing this feature, found that when passkey is choosen from native macOS list of passkeys, 1password opens its own UI, where I should choose passkey again. It would be nice in this case don’t display this UI and just use the passkey (reduce actions that user should click to sign in)

Thank you for the feedback! Can you share which version of both macOS and the 1Password for Mac app you’re using?

macOS: 26.6.1
1Password: 1Password for Mac 8.12.32 (81232026)

I’ve noticed that when clicking a Username field the native macOS autofill option displays with the entry I have in 1PW. Exactly what I expect. However, after selecting the entry it fills the Username and Password … but inexplicably displays the native macOS autofill option again when the focus changes to the Password field. This is not the case when autofilling from the native Passwords app.
