Master Password requests

I am asked for my master password at random times while using Microsoft Edge after using Windows Hello.  If I simply wait a few seconds and try again without doing anything 1Password opens right up.

Here are my security settings

Any ideas as to what is going on?

Hello @Flybuoy! 👋

I'm sorry that you're being expectedly asked for your account password after already unlocking 1Password using Windows Hello. I suspect that the communication between the desktop app (which handles Windows Hello unlock) and 1Password in the browser is running into trouble. Can you try these steps:

If you still see the issue after trying that, then can you post a screenshot of the password prompt that you're seeing? Does it only occur if you try to unlock 1Password from inside of Microsoft Edge? Or does it also pop-up when you try to open the desktop app?

I checked the link you provided and everything checked out.  The password prompt simply says that you must use the master password before you can use windows hello.  This happens with the browser extension and only happens sometimes not every time.  Like I stated previously if I close the prompt and wait a few seconds and try opening the 1Password extension again, it asks for the Windows Hello PIn like it should.  Strange!

Thank you for the reply. The next time that the issue occurs, I'd like to ask you to create a diagnostics report from 1Password in your browser:

Send a diagnostics report (browser extension)

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support@1password.com

With your email please include:

I sent in the requested information.  The triggering event seems to be the Windows 11 update.  It appears that after every Windows update 1Password requires the master password regardless of the settings.

I ended up disabling Windows Hello entirely due to the bugs involved in unlocking.

  1. Use Windows Hello? still asked to enter master password
  2. Use master password? still asked to complete Windows Hello

Long-standing bugs (since 2024 at minimum), still not addressed. It's easier to just disable Windows Hello. Meanwhile, I was hoping we'd get passkey unlock for the vault. No timeline for that, either.

I'm sorry that you're being prompted for multiple unlock methods when you use 1Password. Being prompted for Windows Hello after using your account password to unlock is a bug that remains open in our developer's backlog, I'm sorry for the inconvenience. When you see the prompt for Windows Hello, after you unlock using your account password, you can dismiss it.

  1. Use Windows Hello? still asked to enter master password

To clarify, are you first being prompted for Windows Hello and then being prompted for your account password immediately afterwards? Can you still reproduce this on the latest version of 1Password for Windows?

Windows Hello stopped working for me completely recently. Might have been the switch to the new installer version maybe? I have it enabled but I ALWAYS get prompted for the master password, never Hello

@Stanzilla

I'm sorry that Windows Hello isn't working for you anymore. As a first step, can you try starting your Windows PC to see if that gets things working?

If you still see the issue then can you tell me the following:

  1. Is Windows Hello setup according to the steps in our guide: Set up Windows Hello
  2. Are you being prompted to unlock using your account password when you unlock either the desktop app or 1Password in the browser? Or does Windows Hello work for the desktop app but not the browser?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yeah I restarted several times already and did turn the option off/on again a few times.

Yes it always prompts for the account password, in browser and client.

Was working OK for the last few weeks so I thought the issue was fixed.  Yesterday, a firmware update from Dell installed and today this came up.

Apparently, updates to the computer triggers this problem

I'm sorry that you ran into the issue again. Please reply to the last email that you received from my colleagues in your support ticket, and attach a diagnostics report from 1Password on Windows to your reply. They'll be able to investigate this further.
