New item login field already populated

Hi,

When I create a new item in the Linux, Android and iOS 1Password apps, the login field is already populated with an email address and focus is set on the password field.

How to change that? I would like it to be empty.
It is especially annoying because in my case, it is filled with a an email address I am not using that often.

This change of behavior seems to be relatively recent.

Thanks for your help.

Hello everyone,

I'm happy to share that, with the latest update to the stable version of 1Password (8.10.78), our team has added a setting to turn off the prefilling of usernames when creating new items in the app:

You can find instructions on how to update here: How to keep 1Password up to date

Thanks again for all of the feedback and for always helping us make 1Password more useful for your needs and your workflows.

That is a new issue I had not seen before.  I would understand if it was using either the username most used in a vault/account or the last username used (neither of which is the case).

This seems to be a bug.

  • There is no setting to change this behavior in the macOS application
  • I have checked in the Business Admin portal -- no setting
  • Even when creating a new account in my personal account on the macOS Desktop application, it is using an email from my Business account

Hello @Spacehog! 👋

Thank you for reaching out. When you create a new Login item, 1Password will now automatically fill your email address in the username field and generate a password. Username suggestions are based on the vault that you’re creating a new item in and are suggested based on frequency of previous use in that vault.

You can read more about this new feature on our blog under "Better item creation and navigation - New item creation flow": 1Password product enhancements [Winter edition]: Mobile improvements, better item creation, and even more security features

The current expected behaviour is for 1Password to automatically generate a password and fill it into the password field when you create a new item.

Hello Dave!

Indeed the password is auto-generated and I am fine with that.

But the login is my wife email address which is used in a few items. The thing is that I use a different address email alias for each web site, so I guess her email address comes as a suggestion as it is used more often than each unique alias...

Would it be possible to define a default email address?

Thanks
Nicolas

I have exactly the same. Only he uses my private email address instead of work. It doesn't matter which safe I choose. Very annoying, I would like to choose but I would much rather have an empty email address since I often create a username and password for customers. Can this become a choice asap?

@Spacehog, @K2ICT, @kyngie

The team is currently testing having 1Password suggest the email address in your default identity if one is set. This change is currently available in the nightly version of 1Password and will be released to the stable version as soon as possible.

Good to know you’re responding to our concerns. However, it still doesn’t sound like this change would make this autofill behavior optional. And thus would not solve anything for me, since I use different email addresses for almost all logins. I hope you’ll reconsider and give us the choice whether we want to use this autofill at all. Would make everyone happy.

I seem to have this exact issue as well both on the iOS and mac 1password app. I click + New Item to create a new login for a website. Then I select login. And in the username field, it's a username that I used for another account already. but it's always that exact username that automatically shows up in the username box. Deleting and reinstalling the iOS app seems to have resolved the issue temporarily. but it shows up again after a few days

Thanks for reaching out. You're seeing the new item creation flow, you can read more about it on our blog under "Better item creation and navigation": 1Password product enhancements [Winter edition]: Mobile improvements, better item creation, and even more security features

When you create a new Login item in the apps, 1Password will now automatically fill your email address in the username field and generate a password so that you don't have to do those steps yourself. If you'd like to use another email address or username then you can click into the username field and change the username to a different one.

I see, I appreciate the response! I guess the new feature is a bit problematic though because what pre-populated in the username field is a username that is specific to only one of my accounts. So I’d never use that username for any new account I create. Maybe a drop down menu of most frequently used usernames could be a better implementation of that feature. But yea I can see how it might me useful if people use the same username in all of their accounts

For most users of 1Password, this will probably be a great feature, and while it doesn't bother me too much, it would be nice to have one of a few options in the settings:

  1. Disable Auto-Suggest (do not pre-fill any username)
  2. Allow the ability to select a default username/email
  3. Provide the option to deselect usernames from previously created usernames

I have the integration with Fastmail which is awesome.  I have been on Fastmail long before the 1Password integration existed, but the ability now to create a unique email on the fly is great.  I don't use the completely random emails too often, but I do have 100+ different email addresses in Fastmail (e.g. fitness[@]fastmail; shopping[@]fastmail; etc), so I do not use a single email primarily across my logins.  It depends on the purpose of the login.

In this case, the new feature isn't as useful, but could be if it would also have the ability for me to say, "any shopping website, suggest shopping[@]fastmail as the username" or something similar.

Thank you for those suggestions! While I can't make any promises, I've passed along your feedback to the team internally.

Allow the ability to select a default username/email

The team is currently testing this functionality in the beta version of the apps where username suggestions are based on your default identity. It should be released to the stable version soon.

add me to the list of people frustrated by this change - give us the option to choose this behaviour, or default to blank with a drop down to select the default identity email if that is the one we want.

Most of the login entries I add to 1 password are not for my own email address.

Oh, this is terrible! I'm an IT Consultant/sys admin and this has made my day less than fun! I do hope its gone soon. I don't mean to be dramatic but it really is aggravating. I create new items all day long everyday. None of which involve my own username!!!

For security reasons, it's best practice to have a unique username and password for each account,. That way, if one account is compromised, no part of credentials can be used to gain access to another account.

I even create a unique email for each account so that if that address is somehow leaked, it is only compromising one account.

Another reason to not pre-populate the password is for users transferring credentials from another password manager into 1password by hand. When you are copying and passing information from one application to the other applications like I am doing this moment, pre-populated values get in the way and increase the possibility that the wrong values for the account will in 1Password.

I love 1Password, but please don't try to second-guess the user. They know what they want to do, so make it easy for them to do it!

@komrad

Thanks for sharing your use case. You can now turn off username guessing if you wish, see my post from yesterday

Is there a specific reason why you're migrating passwords manually? 1Password has the ability to import passwords from a variety of password managers, or by using a CSV file: Move your data from other applications to 1Password

Yep. I only want to migrate a select few passwords. I think most methods are  all or nothing approaches.

Thank goodness!!!!! Looking for the setting right now!
