Question

Odds of GUI for FreeBSD?

I like FreeBSD over Linux for a number of reasons, and would daily drive it except that I use the graphical 1Password client along with the SSH agent and CLI and browser integrations. Someone managed to get the desktop client partially working with the Linux emulation layer, but without browser integration working and 2FA required on every login. In my previous attempt at following their example, I found the SSH and CLI integrations also did not work. I believe the CLI integration failed in part because a specific Linux security syscall was not implemented on FreeBSD yet.

Which brings me to my question: is there any chance of a graphical 1Password client on FreeBSD with the same features as on Linux? If not, is it because the user base would be too small, some technical reason, or something else?

(Note: I can’t switch to KeePass or pass because my non-technical spouse and I share some accounts in separate vaults and Bitwarden, the only other reasonable option, has undergone some recent changes that make me question trusting them)

FreeBSD native graphical client support from 1Password is unlikely for a variety of reasons. A port using the Linux compatibility layer is possible, but someone would have to do the work and -as you note - integration with the environment is likely to be the bigger challenge.

As I’m sure you know, there is a port for the CLI.

Notwithstanding recent and likely future changes in commercial “password manager” platforms, it remains wise to maintain several options.
