Passkey/Back up Query

Question

Tried searching the knowledge base but i couldn't find an answer.
If i make a passkey for lets say for instance, google.... Would the passkey i make for this service work on other devices using 1Password or would it only solely work on the device i initially created the passkey for ? I am not entirely sure.

I hear the fido alliance is working on a new backup format that 1password will hopefully use in future. I think its called PCX, memory is bad.

I notice other providers offer encrypted backup's I feel 1password should allow this soon , right now i manually encrypt 1PUK files using GPG symmetric encryption camellia 256.

I get the sense exports aren't really meant to be used as back ups but rather temporary files to be used to migrate to another service, I've seen moderators who work for 1password say they don't recommend backing up 1puks for backup purposes.

It would be nice though to have a physically encrypted offline back up for emergency situations where the internet isn't freely available , i don't know lets say a situation where someone is homeless , a solar flare or times of war. It is true if you don't have an internet connection you can still access your 1password vaults but what if you lose those devices or one has issues ? I agree with the staff, i would rather not use 1PUK as a back up mechanism and have fail safe mechanisms to always be able to access my account, but its just another fail safe in case the internet isn't available and there is no access to devices.

I really love 1password , and i don't take the rich feature list for granted id hate to see the software go. You cant find things like collections in Bitwarden for example, if i click on the linux/ encryption collection, the program solely focuses on all data relating to my linux stuff which is excellent and automatically arranges things based on my interest. Even small features like clicking an entry and making it pop up in a single window is excellent, allows you to solely focus on that entry without all the other distractions. Other password managers are efficient but i feel the design of those products are lazy and unimaginative compared to 1password.

Hello @aligla193! 👋Thank you for the feedback! When you save a passkey into 1Password that passkey immediately becomes available on all of your devices where you have 1Password installed. If you save a passkey in 1Password on one device, you can sign in using that same passkey on a different device as long as you have 1Password installed on that device. 1Password maintains an offline cache of your passwords so that you retain access to them even if you don't have internet access. Passkeys are used for authentication and that usually requires internet access so that the website or app that you're signing into can contact the server on its end. Your 1Password membership backs up all of your passwords, passkeys, and other items to your 1Password account where it is replicated across redundant copies on our end. Item history is kept so that you can restore previous versions of items if you accidentally edit or delete an item: View and restore previous versions of items1Password backupsYou're correct that exports aren't generally considered backups since they're not encrypted and they lack several of the features that a true backup would have such as versioning. You would need to install 1Password on a device in order to import the 1PUX file and the installer would require internet access to download the app, then you would need internet access to sign into your 1Password account using the app on that device before you could import the 1PUX file. -Dave
