Passkeys on Android 13

I'm wondering if there is any chance 1Password will eventually support Passkeys on Android 13 ?

Currently my phone is running Android 13 and, although receiving security updates, will not be upgraded to 14. Obviously I'm not going to drop another €1k on a new phone just to support passkeys and there is zero other reason to upgrade, so I'm wondering if 1password might support version 13?

Hi @dgkimpton,

Very fair question! Android 13 has a limitation that it doesn't support passkeys in third-party password managers, so unfortunately it's out of our hands. If Google makes any changes to Android 13 that would allow us to to offer passkeys, I'm sure we'd investigate making that happen.

Thanks for the reply. That's a real shame given the non-upgradeability of the OS. I guess my passkey journey stops here for a few years, maybe it's a technology of the future. Back to passwords, thank goodness for 1password.

Depending on your device and the state of the boot loader, you may be able to run a custom Android distribution.

If you're shopping for a replacement device and don't want to take out a loan, consider a used Pixel via Swappa or similar service depending on your market. My Pixel 7 updated to Android 16. When Google stops supporting Android updates, you can run e.g. GrapheneOS.
