Physical Keys to unlock on first boot

1Password does not allow FIDO2/Windows Hello to unlock on the first system boot. I've seen comments from 1Password staff that allowing a physical key that can be lost over a password is a risk, and it is but it's a risk the user should get to decide if they want to take.

I have my 1Password set to not lock with my system lock because I also lock Windows itself when I step away from my computer, like most people do/should and constantly unlocking windows then 1Password is a nuisance. If 1Password allowed Windows Hello or Yubikey, I'd leave that setting off and allow 1Password to lock with Windows, which is the ideal/more secure option.

So by forcing passwords on first boot/windows lock to unlock 1Password, you're actually creating a less secure environment IMO. If I lose my physical key that's on me, but let me have the option.

Hello @Blixxybo! 👋

Thanks for reaching out! You can add security keys to a passkey unlock account (currently available only in beta) and use that security key to unlock 1Password. You can read more here:

The team is working to expand this functionality to other 1Password accounts once the public beta ends. Let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂
