Please allow PIN unlock in 1P8 Android

Thanks for sharing your thoughts @robert1p. This is the implementation of PIN unlock we're introducing at the moment but that doesn't close the door for new options or implementations in the future. I've passed along your comments to the team.

+1 I don't want to use biometrics, and can't get the app to let me use a PIN, and I've typed my master password every few minutes for 3 days now and I'm slowly losing the will to live. I'm even considering going back to LastPass at this rate (not really but maybe). Please help.

+1 on @arbitraryreadwrite post. I'm sure it's easier to hijack a 4-digit pin than a 14-character pass phrase, although no difference when a keylogger is installed on your device. And I really don't like the thought that a photo of me can be used to circumvent biometrics on "certain" Android devices with cheaper cameras. So my vote is against the use of PIN unlock (there must have been a reason 1P dropped it from 7 to 8).

I would expect future revs of 1P 8 to be better aware of Android version, since Android support on 8 for version < 9 was dropped, and take advantage of any inbuilt security / authentication mechanisms that didn't exist a year ago when 8 was initially rolled out. Sounds simple, I know, unless you happen to be a developer...

Based on the insightful input from conversations like this thread, we have revisited PIN unlock options with the 1Password mobile apps. There have been some particularly compelling points raised around accessibility and in other areas. Messaging to help highlight potential risks of PIN unlock will be included and there are limitations to how this feature can be used compared to biometric or password unlock.

To your second point, we're always working to keep the 1Password apps up to date with any OS changes and to make use of new options that become available to help ensure their security. The team here is also intent on iterating and optimizing on features like PIN unlock to find a balance between security and convenience for 1Password users. Thanks again!

Has there been any further progress on adding support for unlocking with a PIN with 1Password 8 for Android? Having to regularly unlock with a password really degrades the user experience. I have recently moved from 1Password 8 for iPhone which supports unlocking with a PIN and the user experience is much smoother. I would rather use unlocking with a PIN than biometrics though I can't see that unlocking using biometrics is supported either with 1Password 8 for Android. Another option is to allow permanent unlocking of 1Password and let the user rely on the phone's PIN for data protection though the ability to always be able to unlock 1Password with a PIN is the preferred methodology.

I can confirm there has been work going on behind the scenes to bring additional unlock options to 1Password for Android. While it's not available quite yet we'd certainly like to include additional unlock options with 1Password for Android as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience!

I can't see that unlocking using biometrics is supported either with 1Password 8 for Android.

Biometric unlock is available with 1Password for Android on devices that have a fingerprint scanner or Class 3 unlock security for Face unlock. You can find steps to enable Biometric unlock in our guide: Use your fingerprint, face, or iris to unlock 1Password on your Android device.
