Question

Recovery codes

Please can I ask a quick question about recovery codes: I think I must be misunderstanding something as it seems like this would drastically reduce the security of the data stored in my vault. If I create a recovery code I need to store it somewhere, presumably in a password protected document on my computer or in the cloud, so that recovery code is only as secure as the password I use to protect that document, is that correct?

Many thanks, Cath

Yes, it needs to be stored securely. I recommend a floor vault, safe, etc. I've seen online services fail as well as encrypted USBs. Computer crashes also occur. For this reason I keep mine old school aka paper type.

That's an interesting point, thank you - a note on paper didn't occur to me!

You're welcome.

I use the following.

  1. Floor/fire safe - ease of access.
  2. Floor/fire safe at a relatives homes - backup.
  3. Safe deposit box - failsafe location.
