Safari browser extension won't install

Follow-up: I went to the Mac App Store, downloaded 1Password there (which my Mac calls "1Password for Safari" and is 76Mb in size compared to the 432Mb 1P app I downloaded from 1Password.com), and upon launching it I was immediately able to install the Safari extension and use it in Safari.

IS THIS NORMAL? Am I supposed to have two different 1Password apps in my Applications folder? Will they both properly sync to the cloud to keep everything updated?

I'm sorry that you ran into issues when installing 1Password in Safari on your Mac and I'm glad that you were able to get things working. It's normal to see both "1Password" and "1Password for Safari" in your Applications folder:

• "1Password" is the desktop app.
• "1Password for Safari" is the browser extension. Modern web extensions for Safari have their own icon in the Applications folder.

Both the desktop app and 1Password for Safari will show you all of your items and update them automatically. Let me know if you run into any other issues or have any questions.

Within a few months I'm planning to wipe this 2017 iMac and get a new M4 model. Since my 1Password data are in the cloud (and on my iOS/iPadOS devices) can I assume I can just

• (a) wipe the old iMac without any special de-registering, and
• (b) reinstall both 1P and 1P For Safari on the new machine?

(I have my secret code info saved in 1P, accessible on my iPhone/iPad, as well as in a locked Apple Note in case it's needed.)

You're correct, if you have have a 1Password account and you can see all of your items when you log in to your 1Password account on 1Password.com (in the browser, not the app) then adding 1Password to your new Mac will only require two steps:

1. Installing the 1Password for Mac desktop app: Download 1Password for Mac
2. Installing the browser extension: Download 1Password for Your Browser

Once installed, you can use your Emergency Kit to add your 1Password account to the new device. Make sure to keep the Emergency Kit handy and to ensure that you're signed into 1Password on another device before you wipe the old Mac.
