Safari extension stops unlocking and filling [See pinned response]

Every day the safari plug in fails to work until I restart Safari. Any idea why?
I'm talking about autofill in login boxes.
When I click on the 1p icon in the menu bar it spins for a while, then shows the correct item, but the autofill button does nothing. Then when I restart safari, the autofill suggestion is now there, but invariably there will be an error the first time I submit until I reload the page. The last time this happened was when attempting to login here to post this.

This is new behavior since the last set of updates.

Are you aware of any issues?

We’re happy to share that the latest update to macOS and iOS includes improvements to Safari that resolve a bug where 1Password's suggestion menu would stop working and autofill will stop filling in certain situations.

Just wanted to chime in as well -- I've had Safari issues including this, and more. Unlike the original poster, mine have persisted much longer than the most recent update, so they may be overlapping but not the same.

Currently I have virtually zero 1password functionality in Safari (with the extension) because I cannot get it unlocked.

  1. If I click on the 1PW icon in fields to select a login and fill it, hovering brings up a black tooltip that says "Unlock 1Password," but clicking the icon simply does nothing.
  2. Clicking the 1password icon in my browser toolbar opens the browser extension interface with a "Unlock 1Password" button. Clicking that also does nothing.
  3. The only ways I can fill my login info is Cmd+\ and using the desktop app to fill, or (since that sometimes also bugs out and just doesn't fill), Cmd+\ followed by manually copying + pasting the login info into the browser. 
  4. Unlocking the Desktop app, either via Cmd+\ or clicking the app icon from text toolbar, dock, or applications folder all work fine

Prior to the unlock issue, for weeks I was able to get 1Password unlocked, but often only via the browser toolbar button, not the icon on login fields. Once the browser extension was unlocked, the icon in login fields would reveal dialogs to either fill or create a new login. There were still a variety of issues:

  1. Clicking a login in the login field 1Password dropdown would do nothing -- it simply wouldn't fill (I would have to fall back on a Cmd+/ autofill).
  2. Opening the 1Password dropdown would say there was no login for this site, even though there is, and autofilling from the Desktop app with Cmd+\ worked.
  3. Generating a new password for a site would work, but I would get a 1Password error that the new password could not be saved or that 1Password could not be unlocked.

All of the other Macs in my family + a friend I set up with a 1Password account all have similar issues. 1 of those is an older (outdated) Intel Mac, but the rest are new M-series ones (with one being brand new); all are up to date.

I've been meaning to create a separate ticket with an array of screenshots so will try to do so soon, but for now, wanted to add a datapoint in case helpful for the development team as they hopefully debug this and push updates!

I will note, its easily possible that restarting my browser or other simple troubleshooting would fix the Unlock issue and temporarily fix some of the others -- but the point of this was to provide troubleshooting intel so the development team could work on not requiring user intervention, so I have not yet restarted. In either case, Safari has had consistent issues for at least all 4 Macs I support in my family, so it does not seem like an isolated fluke to me.

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support@1password.com

Thanks, Dave! I had previously sent an inquiry (same time I wrote on this forum post) with my diagnostic reports for both the Safari extension and the Mac app. I just wrote in and updated that same ticket with a link to this post + my username, and a trove of screenshots of the types of errors I regularly receive.

The ticket number is #ZMC-96611-272.

I've been collecting this primarily in hopes of being helpful to 1Passwords, since I love the product, the support, and you all seem like a fantastic team. I'd like to keep using it and helping it improve.

Also encountering this quite a bit. It stops working after a long session of browsing, and it also seems to stop almost every time after the computer has gone to sleep. The icon in the toolbar is locked and won't unlock, and the same for the in-field icons. Quick Access works, however. Unfortunately, it seems like the extension is what handles passkeys, which I've been using more and more, so that's kind of a showstopper to Quick Access as a workaround.

I'm sorry that you're also running into this issue. Have you see the pinned post in this thread, does the suggestion there help you to workaround the issue by opening the website from a new tab in Safari?

@1P_Dave I wanted to specifically pay attention to that for a few days before replying. Opening a new tab has done the trick a couple of times, but most of the time, it has not. It also occurred to me that my most common flow is to open a new tab to go to whatever web site; it's actually pretty rare that I reuse a tab, so most of the time when I see the failure, I'm in a fresh tab, anyway. Restarting Safari does the trick, but only temporarily, and that's not a good workaround since I keep a bunch of tabs open (132 right now in 22 windows --  I cleaned up recently) and sometimes have half-composed messages, etc.

I just canceled my 1Password subscription, Totally dissatisfied with the lack of recent Safari functionality. Done, done, done. While 1Password has historically been the preferred password manager for Mac users, I am uncertain as to why they neglected to provide support for their most loyal customers. It appears that the company may be prioritizing enterprise customers, which is ironic considering that my enterprise partners have submitted requests for proposals to other SAS solutions due to 1Password’s inadequate support.

I'm sorry for the frustration. An issue was introduced with Safari 18.4 where Safari stops relaying browser extension messages (from extensions like 1Password for Safari) from the background to interact with websites and our development team is actively working with our friends at Apple to get this fixed. This issue is limited to Safari and other browsers for the Mac, such as Firefox, Brave, Edge, or Chrome, aren't affected. 

As a temporarily workaround, if you do decide to continue using 1Password, try using the 1Password for Mac desktop app's Universal Autofill feature to fill your login credentials in Safari instead of using the browser extension: Use Universal Autofill in apps and browsers on your Mac

Are there updates for this issues that 1PW does not work on Safari? You folks at 1PW are usually right on top of things, so I am just checking in because my 1password still is not working on Safari 18.4 /OS 15.4.1

Note for the 1Password team: This issue is beyond frustrating for users, and unlike those of us who check the 1P community for issues, the majority of users have no clue. Reviews for the 1Password for Safari extension on the App Store are abysmal. It's time to get ahead of this and protect 1Password's reputation. Here's my recommendations:

  • Publish a community blog post detailing the issue, what steps have been taken to identify and address the issue with Apple, the current status of the fix, and temporary remediation steps as described in this discussion such as using a different browser for the time being or universal auto-fill.
  • Publish a statement in the app description of the 1Password for Safari extension page on the App Store detailing the issue, with a link to the blog post.
  • Show a prompt upon installation of the 1Password for Safari extension with details of the issue, and a link to the blog post.
  • Show a notification bar at the top of the 1Password website, and/or within the portal stating: "Important Notice for 1Password Users within MacOS Safari" linking to the blog post.
  • A one-time push notification or app notice within the 1Password for MacOS application is another solid idea.

It's unwise to continue to allow this issue to be left in the wild without proper notice to prospective customers and current users alike. I fully understand the issue is outside of 1Password's control, and a fix requires Apple's assistance. Be transparent about this fact and leverage the mechanisms within 1Password's control, such as notifications and community outreach, to let users know 1Password is aware of the issue, understands the user experience is deeply unsatisfying, and is working towards a swift resolution by prioritizing this issue above all others. Regardless of usage percentage today, 1Password on MacOS / Safari is and will remain the flagship product and integration for the company. Protect your reputation.

Is this still being investigated?

I notice it's happening a lot to me in Safari - both mobile safari and macOS safari. 

running:

1password extension 8.10.81.1

1Password for Mac 8.10.80 (81080023)

it's to the point it's getting quite frustrating - particularly with passkeys. I'll have it enter my username - prompt for a passkey - only to not show up. 

I'll reboot the browser and it'll work.

I'm sorry for the impact on your workflow. Apple is testing a fix for the issue being discussed in this thread in Safari Technology Preview and hopefully the fix will be released to the stable version of Safari soon.

For the time being, usually just opening the website in a new tab should get things working again. If it doesn't then restarting Safari (as you mentioned) is another workaround.

1P_Dave,  Thanks for staying on this and working with Apple to get it fixed. It seems to be working now on Mac with the latest OS 15.6. Fingers crossed that the iOS update will also work consistently.  ;-)    I  appreciate all your communication around this over the time it was failing us!
