Question

Safari extension window needs to set focus to Search box when opened

Currently, when I click on the Safari extension icon to open the 1Password extension window, keyboard focus is set to the Vault selection item, which is never what I want (I can't imagine why it would be what anyone wants). The keyboard focus should be set to the Search box, so that after opening the window, when I start typing, the Search box gets the text.

This is what happens when I open the 1Password app, so I would expect it behave precisely the same (and correct) way in the extension window.

1Password Version: 1Password for Mac 8.10.46 (81046026)
Extension Version: 81046034, on STABLE channel
OS Version: 15.0 (24A335)
Browser: Safari Version 18.0 (20619.1.26.31.6)

Hello, @NomadUK. Thank you for reaching out.

I have done some testing on my end but haven't been able to reproduce the same behaviour. The search field focused after activating 1Password for Safari's pop-over.

So that I can take a closer look at the issue you are experiencing, I would like to request that you send us some information to mailto:support+forum@1Password.com. With your email, please include the following:

  • Your forum username: NomadUK
  • A video recording of the issue. Please do not share any sensitive information in the video. https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/quicktime-player/qtp97b08e666/mac.

Please do not post your video to the forum. You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here, and I will be able to locate your message and ensure it has reached the right place. Thank you!

I'm seeing this same behavior on one of my Macs but the other doesn't do this.

I've tried removing and reinstalling the plugin. No help.

Did you ever get this figured out @NomadUK or @rmplaw ?

It has been crickets for months. Not sure why this is not being addressed.

Safari, 1 Password extension: The first time using 1Password extension after loading Safari focus is in "Search 1Password" box (that is correct). But every time thereafter focus is in "All Accounts" box, thus requiring a Tab press (or right arrow) to get to "Search" box. Used to work correctly in Safari extension, but hasn't for some time. Tested in Google Chrome and focus works correctly. Any idea when this will be corrected back the way it was?

This behavior is easily reproducible: How? Note that focus is correctly in the "Search" box the FIRST TIME after clicking on the extension after a clean (fresh, first time) start of Safari. It is every time thereafter that the focus is on the "All Accounts" box (and not the "Search 1Password" box as it should be.). I reported this months ago....

@rmplaw,

Thank you for your reply. How much time elapses before the issue arises after you open Safari?

I've put together a brief video showcasing this behaviour on my end. Please let me know if your experience differs from what is presented in the video. -> https://share.cleanshot.com/lXQLkkZy.

Time is not a factor. I notice on your video that the cursor is visible immediately in the Search box (it is not when I open the 1PW extension). You do not seem to type anything in there (to locate an entry), but that's fine because it is obvious the focus is in your Search box. Here is my sequence: (1) I click on the 1PW icon, (2) the extension window opens and the focus does not appear to be anywhere, (3) I start typing the beginning of an entry to find it, (4) I look up and see that the focus has immediately, upon typing, been directed to the Accounts button (uppermost-left) as it is "outlined." And, of course, nothing I type has been entered.

Video sent to Evon showing behavior.

@1P_Dave Thanks for letting me know. Half the battle is reproducing so glad to see that was successful.

Will keep an eye out for the fix.

It's been a month now and still no fix. Unfortunately, this is very annoying.

When can we use the addin as usual again?

@SOSde

I'm no longer able to reproduce the issue using the latest version of macOS and 1Password for Safari. When I click on the 1Password icon in Safari's toolbar, the search field is focused automatically.

Are you still able to reproduce the issue? If you are then which version of macOS and 1Password for Safari are you using?
