Question

Shortcut (.lnk) does not work after update

After an update to 1Password, the shortcut (.lnk) to start the program is no longer valid. The only way I know to get a working shortcut is to access the .exe in:

\Program Files\WindowsApps\Agilebits.1Password_...

There must be an easier way. Why doesn't 1Password generate a shortcut for itself on update?

Hi @rjmolloy!

This happens because 1Password now uses an MSIX installer instead of a traditional EXE. With MSIX apps, the installation path can change when the app updates, which means shortcuts that point directly to the executable can break.

You can follow the steps below to create a desktop shortcut for 1Password that will persist through updates:

1. Press Windows key + R.

2. In the Run dialog that appears, type shell:AppsFolder and click OK.

3. In the File Explorer window that opens, look for 1Password, which should be near the start of the list.

4. Right-click on 1Password, and click Create shortcut.

If you have any further questions, let me know!

Thank you very much! Not only did you fix my issue, but I learned something new about Windows, which I didn't think was likely. I really appreciate your help.
